Discussion Post: Organizing Your Bookshelf

Like most bookworms, I have a TON of books. Like overflowing from my bookshelf, scattered all over my apartment. It's bad. And I'm curious about how all you fellow book lovers organize your bookshelves.
Here's what I do with mine. Alphabetical order by author last name. But a lot of my books are stacked horizontally (see below) and I've even started double stacking because I am just out of room. I also have one shelf dedicated to ARCs which I keep organized by release month. I'm also sometimes really lazy though and I end up just throwing new books somewhere on the shelf because I don't feel like redoing everything.

Definitely running out of room...
Even more so here...
ARC Shelf
So how do you organize your bookshelves? By color? Genre? Author? Do you keep your ARCs separated from the rest of your books?

  1. I don't have many books with me here in DC. Most are still back at home. Here in DC I have two shelves dedicated to my "for fun" books (i.e. not textbooks because they're not fun). I have one shelf for hard covers and one shelf for paper backs. I mainly separated them that way in order to maximize space. I figured if I grouped the same sized books together, they'd fit better and stack better. & Then I have books organized by title or series title.

Yup. One day though, when I get my own place that I'll be staying in more permanently, I hope to have a library of sorts with books probably sorted by author with everything mixed together. I'd probably create an ARC shelf though if I ever get to the point where I have a ton of physical ARCs.

    Love the discussion!

    1. I like the idea of separating the hardcovers and paperbacks. But then, like last week's discussion, I would run into the problem with my mismatching covers... But they would fit better... I honestly don't have that many paperbacks tho (aside from my ARCs which are already on a second shelf). Oh and I have tons more books still in Illinois. My mom is actually driving them out to me this summer. I have no idea where I'm going to put them all. Lol.

  2. I won't lie: I have a stack of ARCs next to my couch that is my to-read/review pile.... There is something kind of fun about having books everywhere and not just on shelves, but it also makes me look a little crazy, haha. Then my shelves are kind of just whatever >.> I keep wanting to organize them, but then I want to read instead so they'll probably never get better ;-)

    1. Haha so true. I remember when I got back from ALA and I just had my ARCs stacked everywhere. It was super fun to walk into the house and just see books everywhere.

    1. Oops, post was all messed up for some reason, trying again-
I'm a bit odd, in that I'm an avid reader, who doesn't own any books :) I get all of my books from my amazing, local library!

    2. That's okay! I was that way when I was unemployed because I had no money to buy books. The library was (and still is) my favorite thing ever!

  4. I honestly have no rhyme or reason to my shelf organization for the most part. The top 2 shelves on one bookcase are my favorites. I do have a shelf exclusively for my ARCs, and on that same bookcase, I have shelves just for fantasy, my Rick Riordan books, middle grade, and my favorite classics. But like I said, I have no organization system, which would probably drive the average book blogger batty.

Great post! Now I want to do one about my bookshelves!

    1. That sounds like you have some organization! I think one day I want a shelf just for my all-time favorite books. Something special to make them stand out so people can tell that I love them, you know? They deserve it. :)

You should! I love looking at people's bookshelves.

  5. I don't have ARCs so no reason to organize them on my bookshelf, lol. I used to be very meticulous when it came to shelving books; by author name and series and whatnot. Now, however. I've been running out of space, so I can't do that anymore! Now I have three shelves and I organize them by "Favorites", "To-Read", and "Meh". Here's a picture of my bookshelves The top shelf is "meh" (I liked but didn't love), "Favorites" is the middle one, and "To-Read" is the last one. I actually have a whole wall full of shelves, I'm just organizing slowly because I have too many books, lol.

    1. First of all, no such thing as too many books. Your shelves look so fun tho! I kinda love messy bookshelves. I think that it shows just how much we love books!

  6. I've got my shelves organized by content. Angels demons, vampires, wear wolves ect, then of course the larger of my books are on the bottom shelves that can hold them. I do also have two shelves for my dystopian books since they seem to take up the most room.
I have my few arcs on a separate shelf but I feel sort of OCD because I don't like that they arnt the same height and I want to put them with similar sized books elsewhere in my cases

    1. That's an interesting way of organizing. I like it! My dystopians would take up so much space. I have so many. Lol, yeah that's why it drives me crazy when my series don't match (like one paperback and two hardcovers) because they look so dumb next to each other.

    2. I hate when they don't match I have one series in particular where I liked the books so much I needed all three but each one was released by a different publisher and their all different sizes.

  7. I don't really have my bookshelves organized except for all hardbacks are together (and all series are together) and I don't have any paperbacks unless they're ARCs. So those are together but because they're paperbacks. If it's an older book, I try and get a used copy of a hardback rather than buy the paperback and if I can't, I just don't have it. So my VA series is incomplete because two of the books weren't released in hardback. So that's a little sad. Maybe I should organize them? ~Pam

    1. Omg I would never be able to not have the complete series! It drives me nuts when the they don't match, but I have to have the complete series. You should organize them. Reorganizing bookshelves is the best!

  8. I have no answer for this haha. I'm moving and have run out of space so right now my organization is large piles of TBR and READ on the floor haha. But with shelves I like to organize alphabetically by authors last name, with series stuck together. We will see when I move whether I stick to that though :) I always keep TBR sorted alphabetically seperatly from read as well... I'm strange !!

    1. Moving sucks! Especially because we already have so many freaking books. It's such a pain in the ass to move all your books and then rearrange them. Good luck with the move!

  9. I used to organize with top shelf being my absolute favorites then my adult favorites then my YA favorites...now I have so many they are just stacked by series or similar authors in front of the organization behind on the shelves...it's a mess haha.

    1. Lol true. That's how mine are getting. When I get a house I bet it will be even worse because then I'll have more space so then I can buy more books. Right? That's how it works right? Lol.
