Discussion Post: When the Covers Don't Match

Yep, this is one of my biggest bookish pet peeves. (Also, that was the best thumbnail to choose from for the video. Fail, Youtube.)

Let's talk! Does this drive you crazy as well? Does it make you slightly twitchy when you stare at your bookshelf and you see that the covers don't match?

  1. The first step in recovery is admitting you have a problem, so here goes...I totally have matchy-match book cover OCD. Yes, I also have the mismatched Shatter Me series and few others, too. This what I do, eventually the publisher will come out with a packaged set of the complete series and I'll buy them again because the packaged set will all match and look pretty on my shelf. So I'll end up with 2 copies of the books. I usually don't even read the second copies; they're just for aesthetics. Crazy, I know. -Dana

    1. Oh, I totally understand! I do the same thing. It's terrible, but I just want my books to match!!

  2. Firstly, YES this past weekend was gorgeous! Loved it! Hated the rain on Monday. Seriously, what was up with that?

Secondly, I agree, I love my books to match. I like to keep my hardcovers and paperback books on separate shelves. So it's weird when a series is all mixed. Ultimately though, I think I prefer my covers to match. That's the lesser of the two evils I guess, in my opinion.

    1. And now the cold this whole week??? *sobs* Why can't it just be summer for real already?

    2. My hardcovers and paperbacks are on the same shelf, but I really prefer my series to match. Boo.

  3. I HEAR YOU!!! haha This drives me freaking insane!!!!! I have the Shatter Me cover with the girl in the dress-- at least they look okay from the side view on my shelf, but really... they need to get with it! For me, if I LOVE the series, I really like them to match-- either all hardcover or paperback. I have the paperback of UTNS and really want to buy a hardcover, but then Mr. Betty yells at me because he says it's ridiculous to buy a book I already own and have already read just because I want it to LOOK better. haha

    1. Well they just don't understand! They have to match it just looks so much nicer that way! And I definitely agree about being a bit more crazy about it if it's a series I love.

  4. I do like books to match but I'm not too crazy if it doesn't. What I don't like us that they change the cover mid series. Why can't they wait until after the series is over. So yeah, thanks!

  6. Yes, I have the hardback version of Shatter Me and I don't like the cover, but I would rather have all hardbacks than have two hardbacks and one paperback. But yes, why not publish the new cover in hardback?? And yes, same with Throne of Glass because the old cover is just…ugh. ~Pam

    1. Yeah, see I'm the opposite. I would rather have all the covers match. But both solutions suck in my opinion. Boo.

  7. Gosh, I CANNOT stand this also rebecca!!! Ugh. I'm in the very slow process of trying to switch some of my paperbacks to hardbacks to match my covers because I would rather have mismatched covers than mismatched FORMS of covers :P The Throne of Glass ones would make me twitchy too :P

  8. I had read this and thought I already commented on it! WOW, fail.
I agree, though. I'm a bit upset that the new Stephanie Perkins book will be a different cover and that I had to buy the paperback of Crewel so it could match my hardcover of Altered. Sigh. Don't they know how OCD book hoarders/buyers are!? haha

  9. Gahhh I know! Okay the ToG one in particular. I never bought CoM bc I was like, what the hell, the size difference between these books is insnae, it'll look weird! So I got it from the library and am waiting for the PB to come out to buy it. Which sucks because I just have to wait. BUT I do want to get assassin's blade because come on, it's freaking gorgeous and I need it.

    1. Yeah, it drives me crazy that the size is so different. But I'm actually thinking of buying the UK editions from book depository because have you seen them?? So freaking beautiful. Maybe I will buy all those in pb that way at least one edition of the series can match. My husband will flip if I tell him that I'm buying the UK version just because it's pretty though...

  10. THIS! This is totally, totally true! The Shatter Me example is definitely one I can relate to- it's so pretty, but I want to have a Shatter Me in that beautiful cover! Cover changes are sometimes necessary, or if it's done for whatever reason, I just wish they would publish the new cover in hardcover. I think that it's something I can deal with, but it is a little bit of a bookish pet peeve.

    1. I know!!!! WTF. I want a beautiful eye in hardcover! Grrr... Yes, I do agree that cover changes are sometimes necessary and are a good thing, but then republish the books in hardcover. Is that so hard?? It probably is. Probably costs too much money. Boo.
