We all go through this right? I'm sure I can't be the only one. Those times when you just don't feel like reading.

I know. I'm shocked too. But I go through these periods occasionally. The most recent was this past weekend. Phil and I have been rewatching the first 3 seasons of Game of Thrones before season 4 premieres this Sunday. We got kind of a late start.... So last weekend we just started binge watching to get through it in time. Let me just tell you guys that I LOVE that show. (No, I have not read the books yet.) So as soon as we started watching, I didn't want to do anything else but watch GOT all weekend. Including reading. So my Kindle sat neglected on my coffee table.
But then I start to get stressed. Some of you may not know this about me, but I am not a mood reader so I have a loose reading schedule I follow in an attempt to read my ARCs in some type of order. But I'll talk more about that some other time. Anyway, because of this, if I go through a period of nonreading, I get stressed because I feel like I fall behind. But I don't want to force myself to read because then I won't enjoy the book.
So what do I do? Mostly just keep binge watching GOT and then read really fast to "catch up". Most of the times it works out for me because I do read really fast, but other times I have to cut my "free book" of the week which is disappointing.
Do you ever go through periods where you don't feel like reading? What do you do to get over this kind of "slump"? Do you also feel like you fall behind on your TBR?
Usually if I don't feel like reading, it's because I'm forcing myself to read something I'm not interested in. I read short stories or switch genres to give myself a break, but if I read a bunch of books I don't like in a row, I'll go back to rereading some of my favorite books.

That's a good idea. I wish I had more time to reread, but whenever I think about it, I look at my giant TBR pile and feel guilty.
DeleteI'm actually having the opposite problem, I don't want to do anything BUT read. I've quit watching so many TV shows because I would rather read, so I'm just watching the ones I really love. Like Game of Thrones. I can't wait until Sunday! It's like my Superbowl, I'm counting down the days. I didn't rewatch all of the previous episodes, but I did watch the last one from season 3 so I would know exactly where everyone was. ~Pam
ReplyDeleteI am so freaking excited for Sunday!! It cannot come fast enough!! It's so fun to rewatch. I have caught so many things from watching it again that I missed the first time.
DeleteI find if I set my self a TBR I just get over whelmed and read something else if I read at all.
ReplyDeleteYeah, sometimes I feel that way. But I have to have organization or I will be even more stressed.
DeleteRebecca, this is so ironic because I have a discussion post scheduled for next week about the same (ish) topic and how TV distracts me! I got through this OFTEN, but it's more like I really want to read but TV wins haha. I recently did it when I binge finished Gossip Girl, then I binge watched two other shows from Netflix that had only one season up. It's a battle. I ALWAYS feel like I fall behind in my TBR because of it! Then I get anxious. It's a constant never ending circle for me, because I continuously do it :) Side note: YAY, I'm glad to hear you love GOT! My boyfriend said he will rewatch this with me so we are going to start after we move (because lord knows that if I start it before, I will get zero packing done haha).
ReplyDeletehaha great minds think alike. Yes, TV can be very distracting. I do prefer reading over watching TV but there are just some days where I want to sit and veg on the couch all day just mindlessly watching TV. Is that too much to ask? Lol. GOT is totally worth a rewatch. You will catch so many things you missed the first time! Good luck with the move!
DeleteI am always falling behind on my TBR hahaha. I just can't keep up with all of the books I have to read and want to read and am trying to read by the pub date (doesn't happen). It's so hard when I'm not in the mood to read and I know I should be! It doesn't happen often but it does happen haha!
ReplyDeleteYes, exactly. It doesn't happen very often, but when it does, I totally fall behind.
DeleteHi, my name is Wendy and I read one book in the month of May. *hangs head in shame* Okay, so the end of my last semester of dental school was crazy and I had no time. And then I was just trying to hang out with people since we're all leaving soon. But this past week? Been in a serious funk. I sit and watch TV and I have things I need to read/want to read but I just don't. Kind of life stuff but I think I'm finally getting back into it so hurray!
ReplyDelete*gasp* No, it's okay. You're busy with life. That happens. I don't know how you ever find time to read while you're in school. I never did. I didn't get back into reading until after college because I had zero time. Those periods happen. Maybe you should just read the new JLA book. I'm sure it will pull you out of your reading funk. :)
DeleteI've definitely been through times when reading has not been at the top of my priorites. And that's fine! It's something that should be enjoyable. I think that I'm looking at this in retrospect with what I said about my TBR, and I remember you mentioning you're not much of a mood reader in the comments on that- always lovely seeing your comments on the blog btw, always thoughtful and thought provoking! Half the time I just send you a tweet because I want to talk more about things/books and you've brought up a great point! Anyways, back to this, I definitely think that there are times when I'd rather marathon a tv show than read. It's all about balance. And while we're talking about all things GOT, I have yet to see the tv show, and I've been (very slowly) working my way through the first book. About halfway through and it's really great so far. But they're huge books!
ReplyDeleteWell thank you for all the comment love today! You're the best. :) I'm the same way. Sometimes I just am in the mood to watch TV or just do something different than read. I really want to read the GOT books, but they are chunkers and they intimidate me. I know I'll like them, but I'm the type of person that likes to read books quickly and jump into the next one and obviously I won't be able to do that with GOT. But hopefully soon!
