I used to enjoy writing short stories when I was a kid. I barely remember them actually, but I do remember writing them. Then when I got into high school, I wrote a lot of poetry (a lot of really bad poetry, but still).
After high school, I kind of fell out of writing
for pleasure. I was busy with college and was writing never-ending
papers and throwing together constant group projects. I just didn’t have
time. Then I graduated and started my first big
girl job. At this point I had completely forgotten just how much I
loved to read and write. After my first big girl job didn’t work out (I
quit due to some complicated issues), I started reading again.
Voraciously. I got myself a library card and frequented
my local library often.
Then one night while I was trying to fall asleep I
had this (what I thought was at the time) “great” idea for a book. I
called my sister up the next day and asked her what she thought. She had
some ideas of her own to add into it so we
began writing. Looking back, that manuscript was truly terrible. But it
served a purpose. It got my writing juices flowing again.
I came up with another idea a short time later and
began really truly writing. I finished my first draft and then found a
critique partner online. I am now on my third round of revisions hoping
to send the manuscript out by the end of the
year. I also have some other ideas floating around in my head for
future stories.
I have never really known what I wanted to do with
my life. I went to school for fashion merchandising which turns out
isn’t as glamorous as it sounds. I no longer wish to pursue a career in
that field and I was having a hard time deciding
what I liked to do. But when I started writing, it just felt right.
This is what I love. Reading and writing stories. I love how a book can
make me disappear into another world for a few hours. Writing does the
same thing for me and I hope that one day, my
writing will do that for others.
*SQUEALS* Great post, Becca! It's awesome hearing about your writing journey and knowing i got to read your ms (which, btw, is amazing!) before anyone else ;) Wishing you all the luck in the world with revisions. You've got this! =D
ReplyDeleteAwww thanks! You are the best! Whenever I'm feeling like my ms sucks, I know I can count on you to make me feel better. :)
DeleteThis is the best thing I heard!! I love hearing when a bookish person wants or is doing multiple bookish things!! Congrats and good luck!! I can't wait to read more of this side of you!
ReplyDeleteOh thank you so much! That means a lot to me. <3
DeleteI love that you are sharing about your writing! You have inspired me to talk about my own writing on my blog now and again. I think it's a good thing! I have been working on revisions of a manuscript for awhile and it's hard work, but I'm in a small writer's group and that's helpful but it only meets once a month. So I think having online support as well is a good idea. Can't wait to hear more about your writing!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm so glad that I could help encourage you to share. I will check out your posts. And if you ever feel like talking about writing feel free to tweet me or email me!
DeleteYayyyy! I do not have a fiction writing gene in me anywhere, so I'm just cheering you on! I hope we're all reading your ARC someday. :)
ReplyDeleteAww thanks dear! I hope so too. :)
DeleteThat's so awesome that you're writing and I'm impressed that you've actually finished a novel and are revising it! I can't wait to read it. I also loved writing in middle school and high school (bad poetry and 3 novels). I actually took a creative writing class after college and had to come to the realization that I just sucked at it. So I just read instead!! I can't wait to hear more about the process, it's fascinating. ~Pam
ReplyDeleteThank you! (oh the bad poetry days...) I hope you get to read my book sometimes in the nearish future! *crosses fingers*
DeleteI love that you're sharing about your writing! Best wishes with everything. <3

ReplyDeleteAww thanks dear! :)

And I commend you for taking life by the horns and doing something about being not completely happy with your current job :) Love it!
ReplyDeleteThank you!! I'm really excited about the whole thing. :)
