Hi everybody! How was your week?
Mine was super fun. You know why? Because my sisters were visiting!!
Woohoo! They arrived last Friday from Chicago so we went into DC on
Saturday and Sunday to do all the touristy things. Here's the rundown:
Saturday:
Library of Congress:
Beautiful. You walk in and you can just smell the old books.
Unfortunately you can't actually go in to see the books because they
only let special people with research permits in. Boo. But there was a
pretty viewing room where you could look out over all the gorgeous
books. Also the gift shop has so many awesome bookish things. BUT I
restrained myself and didn't buy anything! Who am I?
Shake Shack: First time for all three of us going to
Shake Shack. It was amazing! Best shake I've ever had. Seriously. Then
we got stuck in the rain and none of use brought an umbrella. Worth it?
YES!
National Archives: Off to see the Declaration of
Independence and The Constitution! This was super cool. So much history.
You can literally feel the history in the room as you're looking at
these ancient documents that formed our country.Oh and we also saw the Capitol.
After that we headed back home and watched Frozen! And of course, sang all the songs at the top of our lungs.
Sunday:
The Holocaust Museum:
This museum/memorial was amazing. So emotional. I was tearing up
walking through the permanent exhibits. Speaking of, if you're ever
interested in going here, you should get in line outside the museum by
like 9:15am. They give out permanent exhibit tickets and only have a
certain number per day. It is free, but you have to have the tickets.
Definitely worth the wait though. I learned so much, felt so much. It
truly is an emotionally moving experience.
After this we walked over to the
White House, which is
honestly pretty anticlimactic. You get there and then you're kind of
like... that's it? But it's still cool to see. After that we walked over
to the war memorials. We saw the
Vietnam Memorial, the
Korean War Memorial, and the
WWII Memorial. We also went to the
Lincoln Memorial and found the typo on the wall.
Natural History Museum: So we could see all the shiny
gems! They have the Hope Diamond on display there and it is absolutely
stunning. My sisters were pretty bummed that the dinosaur exhibit was
closed. Phil and I went and saw it a few weeks ago before it was shut
down for a few years for renovations. But we still walked around and saw
all the other cool things. Oh, and we got some awesomely adorable stuffed dinosaurs!
After that we were quite exhausted so we went home and collapsed.
Phew. That was one busy weekend. Also I got a horrible sunburn. :( Ouch.
So fun! What an awesome weekend! I'm super jealous you live close enough to visit DC whenever you want to--I've still never been. :)
ReplyDeleteI had never been until I moved here like 6 months ago. I highly recommend visiting sometime. It's a really amazing city. So much to do and see and the best part? Most of it is free!
DeleteDid you know that anyone can get a Library of Congress library card? Yes, you technically can't just browse books unless you're researching something, but you could research anything. Even say your just genealogy. All you need is a library card, which is extremely easy to obtain. I've never had any reason to research anything, but it's kind of cool to say that I have a library card for the Library of Congress. LOL.
