Synopsis
from Goodreads:
All Hanna Euli wants is
to become a proper witch – but unfortunately, she’s stuck as an apprentice to a
grumpy fisherman. When their boat gets caught up in a mysterious storm and
blown wildly off course, Hanna finds herself further away from home than she’s
ever been before.
As she tries to get back, she learns there may be more to her apprentice master than she realized, especially when a mysterious, beautiful, and very non-human boy begins following her through the ocean, claiming that he needs Hanna’s help.
My
Review:
My first Cassandra Rose Clarke book was a....drumroll
please....WIN! Hooray! I loved this book! I haven't read her other series, The
Assassin's Curse, but believe me, I will be. Especially considering that
the DAY AFTER I finished this book, both The Assassin's Curse AND The Pirate's Wish were on the Kindle daily deals for $1.99!! I mean, what are
the chances??? Naturally, I bought them both. Even though I'm supposed to be on
a book buying ban. *hangs head in shame*
The Wizard's Promise
was imaginative, fast-paced, intricate, and riveting. I literally read this
book, start to finish, in one sitting. The main character, Hanna, was amazing.
She's spunky, smart, and has just the right amount of snark. I want to be best
friends with this girl. She dreams of adventures and wants nothing more than to
train to be a wizard. She can work some magic, but she's never been trained and
therefore, doesn't think of herself as very good. But even with all this desire
of adventures, when she is thrown into one, she sure does complain a lot.
Granted, I would to. She literally has no idea what's going on and her
apprenticeship master refuses to tell her anything. I would have thrown this
guy overboard.
There isn’t a major romance which actually was quite
refreshing. There’s maybe a hint at one to come, but I don’t really know if it
will ever develop. This is only a duology so I guess we’ll see what happens in
the second book. But I did like the maybe romantic interest. He was
fascinating. Mysterious, aloof, but super sweet. I NEED to know more about him.
The world is super interesting and from my understanding, is
the same world her first series is set in. There are basically a bunch of
islands spread out throughout the North, with a mysterious evil Empire residing
in the South. To the far far North are the Mists, eerie and not quite human
creatures that are extremely dangerous. The plot of the book is pretty
mysterious and we have to try to figure it out along the way just like Hanna
does. But that's really what kept me glued to the pages.
I raced through this book, turning the pages as fast as I
could as I tried to figure out what the heck was going on. I was intrigued by
every single character and I am dying to find out what happens next! It didn't
end on a super crazy cliffhanger, but I still want more. If you're a fan of
fantasy, this is one you won't want to miss. Happy reading all!
Let's talk! Have you read this one? What did you think of the main character, the maybe love interest, and the world? Have you read her other books? Thoughts on those?

The Assassin's Curse series is definitely worth breaking your book buying ban for ;)
ReplyDeleteI actually think that series is better than this one- the narrative voice is a lot more distinctive, and more exciting things just happen in general. And yep, it's the same world as The Wizard's Promise. Actually, you know the person Hanna is named after? (Ananna) She's the protagonist in the Assassin's Curse series :)
Oooh really??? That's awesome! So basically it's going to be a pirate book? I'm so excited now. Totally moving those books up on my TBR.
DeleteYou definitely have to read The Assassin's Curse if you loved this one. I just finished Wizard's Promise yesterday also in one sitting and was a little sad by how similar the two were, but that just means you'll love Curse too :D
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited now. I can see how it would be disappointing though if the stories are super similar. Hopefully since I loved this one, I will love them as well. :)
DeleteHmmm…to be honest, I was so excited to read this book because I absolutely loved her other duology, but I had to stop about 25% in because it was sooooo boring! Nothing was happening. I'm going to pick it back up at some point, but I was disappointed, to say the least. Your review makes me have some hope it gets better. ~Pam
ReplyDeleteReally?? Bummer! I have heard a lot of people say that they were disappointed. Most people who didn't like it read her other duology so maybe that's why. Hmm... I bought her other series so we'll see how I like that one.
