Discussion Post: How Often to Post

Do you ever wonder how often you should post? I do. Right now I post six days a week. Monday-Saturday. But sometimes I worry that's too much. Do my readers get annoyed that I post so much? But if I don't will they be disappointed that there's no new content every day? It's so hard to decide exactly what you want to do.

For me personally, I don't care how often someone posts, as long as they're consistent. If that means they only post on Mondays, that's fine. Because I know on Mondays I have a new blog post to look forward to. If they post seven days a week that's fine too. I may not read every single one of their posts just because of time, but I pick the posts I do want to read and I've definitely never been annoyed. The only time I have been a little annoyed is when I come across bloggers who post more than once a day. That seems to just clog up my blog feed and it tends to drive me crazy. But other than that, I really don't care how often somebody posts.

Here's the thing. When it comes to blogging there are no rules. You do what works for you. Right now, six days a week works for me. That might not be the case forever. In fact, I've been considering cutting that back a little because I've just been so busy lately. But in my opinion, it's totally up to you how often or how little you want to post. As long as the posts are quality and not thrown up at the last minute just for the sake of posting, I'm happy.

But I want some other opinions on this. Is six days a week too much? Too little? How many posts per week do you usually put up (if you're a blogger)? As a blog reader, what do you like to see? Posts every day or just a few a week?

  1. I think it's always interesting to see the answer to this! Personally, it doesn't matter to me since I follow via Bloglovin. I'm usually behind on my commenting and reading of blogs nowadays so I spend my time catching up so I really don't even know how often people post! I think people should post whatever works best for them. I personally post 5-6 times a week (always on weekdays, sometimes an extra post on weekends) and I've worried in the past that it might be too often or annoying but hey, it's my blog! Haha.
To sum up, I don't really have a "preference" - just do whatever works for you! But I do like to see "consistent" posts. At least once a week... I think if you're a blogger who's trying for ARCs and things like that then there actually is an expectation to post reviews a couple times a week. But like I said, whatever works for you! I think the only possible annoying thing is posting multiple times a day multiple times a week. But that's a LOT of content!! Sometimes I double post but rarely.
I guess I can see it getting annoying with "too many" posts if you're someone who gets emails from them (I almost threw a fit when I was subscribing by email haha - thank goodness for feed readers) but there's always a way to just filter through what you don't want to read anyway!
    Interesting topic!

    1. That's very true. I use bloglovin as well so I really don't notice how often people post. I just scroll through and read what I want to read and mark the ones I don't want to read as read. Yes, I definitely think that reviews are important especially if you're requesting ARCs. That's why I end up doing 3 of them per week. Trying to get that TBR under control! I really don't want to cut back at all, because then I feel like my blog will be mostly reviews and I really like the balance I have going on right now. So it sounds to me like you don't care and I should just do whatever I want to do! :)

  2. As a reader, I just prefer consistency and quality. I know everyone has a busy schedule so I don't expect them to post like I do (4-7 times a week). But I like to 'know' when to expect them i.e. they post a review on Monday and another type post on Thursday or they only post once a week. All of that is fine! I now know when to keep an eye out for their posts. I always hate to see bloggers go 'missing' or they stop posting but I do understand that life takes full priority.

As far as quality goes, I don't want to see a post every day if you're struggling to get a post up everyday. Posting a meme or other filler post just to have something posted can be annoying. I now I used to be like that in my baby blogger days but now I know it's totally FINE to skip a day if you don't have anything worthwhile to post. Your readers will still be there.

Great topic! I always enjoy seeing how others feel about this.

    1. Great points! I totally agree. If I have nothing interesting to blog about, I'll definitely skip it instead of trying to force it. It will definitely translate in my content to my readers and that's the last thing that I want. Life definitely takes priority, but my blog is such a huge part of my life that they're kind of intertwined you know?

  3. I always love seeing your posts because you update a lot but it's with thoughtful content. I think for me I'll post several times a week, but the amount of posts per week varies and my main concern is spacing it out so that I don't go too long without having new content on the blog.
Honestly, to me the most essential aspect is quality and you've definitely never had a problem there. I love reading about your discussion posts, reviews, etc. so I would say post as much as you can as long as you're happy with what it is. Like you said, blogging is a very personal thing and each blogger adapts their blog to fit them. This is definitely a thought provoking piece, and I loved hearing from you about it!

    1. Awww thank you!! You just made my night! <3

I definitely don't like going too long without posting so the point about spacing is out is an excellent one.

  4. I guess I don't really have a preference for the blogs that I follow. Although, I agree that a blog can post too much. I don't mind a double post now and then, but people who have 3 posts a day, almost every day kind of overwhelm me.

I do follow quite a few awesome bloggers, so if someone doesn't have new content, I move on to the next without much thought about why. Like you said, as long as they post at least once a week I'll probably keep checking in/following. If I check in a few times and there is nothing, I might feel kind of worried.

For myself though, I often feel like it is a struggle to be consistent. Ideally, I would like to have a new post Mon-Fri. Sometimes life cuts into my reading/blogging time and if I'm not vigilant about staying ahead of schedule I end up with nothing to post. It's been so nice since Samantha started co-blogging with me though! She posts Monday & Tuesday (usually) and since we don't do many weekend posts, that gives me quite a few more days to actually read. Plus, after you posted your awesome google calender schedule, we started color coding our own pretty review schedule and so far it makes staying on track so much easier!

Also, your posting habits are great. If you posted less I wouldn't mind and from the sounds of it, you won't be triple posting anytime soon. Great topic, Rebecca!

    1. Very true. I follow so many different blogs that if somebody misses a day I usually don't even notice. They have to miss a few days in a row before I'll be like "hey, where's so and so been".

I bet! My problem I think is that I read a lot. Like 3-4 books per week and I want to review them all. So I guess it's finding the time to a). write the reviews and b). not post too often or too many reviews per week you know?

I'm so glad that the google calendar schedule works for you! I love it and would totally die without it.

  5. I honestly don't mind how often a blogger posts. Since I follow through Bloglovin, and check my feed every couple of days, I just click through on the links that interest me. So whether that's multiple posts a week, or one post a week, I just read the posts that I want to read :) (I don't always comment though! Takes up so much time to comment on all those posts!)

I don't particularly have a preference for consistency either. Since all the posts get put in order of publication on my Bloglovin feed anyway, and I check it every couple of days, it's not like a person that usually posts on Monday posting on Tuesday will completely ruin everything haha :P

    1. That's what I do so I agree. I don't really notice when a blogger misses a day or two. I will notice when they post multiple times a day though and that can get annoying to me. Commenting does take up a lot of time. I try really hard, but sometimes I'm just way too busy!

  6. I've thought about this too because sometimes I wonder if we post too much (we post usually 5-7 days a week). But I think most people just read the posts they're interested in so I don't think it really matters in the end. The multiple posts a day is a bit much and especially if it's all cover reveals and blog tours where they don't review the book. But I like reading reviews, discussion posts, and most of the memes. We've cut back on the WoW meme (doing it only once a month) and then we stopped Top Ten Tuesday for awhile but we've started that one back up. Sometimes when I'm scrolling through the bloglovin feed and it's all memes, that gets a bit old. But you should definitely post as many (or as few) times a week as you want. Interesting discussion! ~Pam

    1. I think that you guys are fine! Like I said, as long as it's not multiple times a day, I'm good. And your posts are always so thoughtful and interesting. I love reading your reviews and discussion posts.

I'm thinking about stopping TTT just because I honestly feel like it's one of the most time consuming posts to write for me (since I usually do the cute graphics and then have to sit there and link everything). Plus I have so many interesting discussions that I would like to do... But at the same time I really enjoy participating in that meme and I often discover new books to read from reading other people's TTT. I completely cut out WoW as well. I just didn't have time for it. I actually wanted to add in a review each week so I cut it so I could do more reviews. I have put books that I'm looking forward to into my monthly wrap-up posts though (although I totally didn't do a May wrap-up...oops).

  7. I read through Bloglovin so I don't really notice who's posting once a month or once a day. I probably follow blogs that haven't had a new post in months and I haven't noticed. I just read the posts that interest me and sometimes there are 5 or 6 by the same person in one week. It doesn't bother me at all. I think more than once a day is probably too much, if it's a regular thing and not just occasionally, but if that's how the blogger wants to spend her time, it's fine with me.

For my own blog, I post anywhere from 3-7 day a week. I usually try for 5 but more often it's 4.

    1. That's what I do! I do notice when they post more than once a day though. But for the most part I don't really follow anyone that does that.

  9. I'm really struggling with this right now. When i started my blog a few months ago my kids were in school and I had time to read 3-4 books a week and blog 6-7 days a week. However, since the kids summer vacation has started, I have NO spare time. It seriously just took me 5 days to get through a 160 page book. I'm so screwed, ugh lol.

    1. Well then I think you just slow down during the summer. Don't post so many reviews, but maybe do some other fun posts. Whatever you do will be great! I think that, along with a bunch of other people commenting on this, you can post as much or as little as you can/want to as long as the content you're posting is quality. Try not to stress over it!

  10. I usually don't like to see more than one post per day. Two in a day is okay as long as it's not a common thing. But posting too much can be annoying!.

If it's a blog I love than posting too little can disappoint me too, but I guess ultimately my disappointment should be seen as a good thing. It means I love the content and want more!

    1. I agree. It just clogs up my blog feed. That's a great point! I guess it is a good thing to be disappointed when one of your favorite blogs posts too little. :)
