You know what one my favorite things to do is? Look at all the upcoming releases on Goodreads! I love to discover all these new and exciting books coming out so I can wait in agony for them to be released. And you know what I've noticed? A HUGE trend in retellings. Not just limited to fairytales either. I've seen Frankenstein retellings. Shakespeare retellings. Pretty much anything. For both 2015 and 2016. I really think that we're going to be seeing a LOT of retellings in the next couple years. Which I'm not complaining about. I do love me a good retelling. As long as it's done well. Like Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles or Claire Legrand's Winterspell. If all these retellings are anything like those two, we are in for a very good couple years. I love the way people reimagine classic fairytales and stories and I can't wait to do see what these amazing authors are going to do. I thought I'd share a list of 2015 & 2016 retellings with you guys that I'm excited about.
2015 Retellings:
Winter by Marissa Meyer - November 10, 2015 - the last book in the Lunar Chronicles series!!
This Monstrous Thing by Mackenzi Lee - September 22, 2015 - Frankenstein retelling!
A Whole New World: A Twisted Tale by Liz Braswell - September 21, 2015 - a whole series of Disney stories with a twist!
Spelled by Betsy Schow - June 2, 2015 - Wizard of Oz retelling! Hopefully this one doesn't disappoint like Dorothy Must Die did...
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas - May 5, 2015 - It's a Beauty and the Beast retelling by Sarah J. Maas. Um... DYING!!!
Alice in Wonderland High by Rachel Shane - April 18, 2015 - A contemporary retelling of Alice in Wonderland! This one sounds so fun!
A Wicked Thing by Rhiannon Thomas - February 24, 2015 - Sleeping Beauty retelling - I wasn't a huge fan of this one, but a lot of other people liked it.
Fairest by Marissa Meyer - January 27, 2015 - Queen Levana's (aka the Evil Queen) story. How have I not read this yet??
Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge - May 5, 2015 - Little Red Riding Hood retelling! I don't know that I've ever read one of those...
Never Never by Brianna Shrum - September 22, 2015 - A Peter Pan retelling all about Captain Hook and how he became what he is. Omg. My Hook fangirl is screaming for this book!!
Ash & Bramble by Sarah Prineas - September 15, 2015 - Cinderella retelling. Not really a retelling though. About the girl who makes the dresses for the fairy godmother and the shoemaker. Um, yes please.
The Isle of the Lost by Melissa de la Cruz - May 5, 2015 - I can't begin to express how excited I am for this book. It's about Disney villains' children!! *squeals* This is the prequel novel to the movie Disney's Descendants that comes out sometime this summer!!!
Mechanica by Betsy Cornwell - August 4, 2015 - Mechanic Cinderella retelling. Sounds similar to Cinder, but I'm not complaining.
The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh - March 12, 2015 - A retelling of A Thousand and One Nights, another one I haven't read, but this book sounds amazing.
Tear You Apart by Sarah Cross - January 27, 2015 - This sounds like a mash-up of a bunch of fairytales and is actually the sequel to Kill Me Softly which I haven't read, but both sound amazing!
Mirrored by Alex Flinn - September 15, 2015 - A Snow White retelling of sorts about the witch from Snow White training a modern girl on how to make herself the "fairest of them all".
The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest by Melanie Dickerson - May 12, 2015 - Pitched as "Swan Lake meets Robin Hood" about a girl who poaches to feed the poor.
Fair as Snow by Tracy Barrett - July 2015 - Snow White retelling where the evil queen really may be the "fairest of them all".
2016 Retellings:
The Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins - March 2016 - Inspired by the Grimm Brother's "The Singing Bone". I've never read it, but this book sounds awesome!
Heartless by Marissa Meyer - 2016 - A prequel to Alice in Wonderland. Um, it's Marissa Meyer. This is bound to be awesome.
Never Ever by Sara Saedi - 2016 - Another Peter Pan retelling!
Blackhearts by Nicole Castroman - 2016 - A Blackbeard retelling! Yes, please to pirates!
Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter - March 2016 - A retelling of a Russian folktale "Vassilisa the Beautiful" - Never heard of it, but it says there's an evil stepsister and a magic doll. I'm in.
The Stars Turned Away by Lisa Maxwell - 2016 - Yet another Peter Pan retelling. I don't even care. I'm so excited.
Untitled Aladdin Retelling by Jessica Khoury - This doesn't even have a release date yet, but I don't care. It sounds awesome. About a genie in love with Aladdin forced to grant his wishes for trying to fall in love with another girl.
The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine - 2016 - It's a Snow White retelling by C.J. Redwine!!!! I'm freaking out!!!!!!!
Untitled by Rosamund Hodge - 2016 - Pitched as "Shakespeare meets Sabriel". Um, I LOVED Sabriel so I'm all about this.
The Steep and Thorny Way by Cat Winters - 2016 - Inspired by Hamlet. More Shakespeare. Yes, please.
This is how I feel about all these books:
