I love road trips. Well, at least at the start. (By the end, I am dying to get out of the car.) I get my cooler and bag of full of snacks. I get my perfect road trip playlist. I get my perfect road trip buddies. And of course, I get my books. Because to me, road trips mean hours and hours of uninterrupted reading time.
My husband and I recently drove up to north Jersey for a wedding. It's about a 4 hour drive give or take with traffic. I was so excited. That was 8 hours of uninterrupted reading time! I would finish at least 2-3 books in that time! Heck yes!
Heck no. Phil would not let me read the whole drive up there. I know right? He's mean. He was all "No, you have to talk to me and entertain me..." Ugh. Doesn't he know I have books to read? Worlds to visit? Characters to meet? He let me read on the way home, but on the way up, nope. I guess I understood a little. It was late. We didn't leave until 7pm so we didn't arrive until like 11:30. So I'm sure he was tired. But the whole time driving my fingers were twitching towards my Kindle.
I love reading in the car. It makes the time go by so quickly. I read on the way home and when I looked up from my book we were already in Delaware! It's amazing how much faster the drive goes when I'm lost in another world.
But I also know people who can't read in the car. Like my sister. She gets carsick. So sad. Seriously. All of you people that are afflicted with this horror are missing out on prime reading time. Life just sucks sometimes doesn't it?
Road trips and airplanes are some of my prime reading spots. Hours that would otherwise be wasted are now put to good use. I think that's why I hate traffic so much. I mean, I know everyone hates traffic, but I have bad road rage. And it's because I know that all that time is being wasted. So many books I could be reading, but instead I'm sitting behind stupid people. Sorry, that was kind of a tangent. Back to the point of this post...
Can you read in the car? Do you have a spouse who won't let you read when you road trip together? :P

OMG! this goes with my post today hahaha. I can't read in the car. I get horribly carsick and then want to puke. Even if I play on my phone for awhile I get carsick. I love road trips though! (Even if my husband gets annoyed at my frequent bathroom stops). I love getting snacks for the trip, etc. I always envied people who could read in the car. I TOTALLY get what you mean about traffic -- see my post today, lol. I've started doing audiobooks and it's changed my life haha.
ReplyDeleteReally? I'll have to check it out! That is so sad. My sister is the same way. I seriously feel so bad for you guys. Because road trips are like the greatest time to read. TRAFFIC IS SO STUPID AND ANNOYING. Ugh.
DeleteI can read in the car but I rarely do just because there are too many distractions and I would just end up setting the book aside. Now if it was a road trip rather than a quick outing, then I would definitely take a few books with me.
ReplyDeleteYeah, just short car rides I don't because it's not enough time for me to get into the story. Or I get into the story and then don't want to stop reading when I get to my destination.
DeleteYes, I definitely read in the car, I'm so glad I don't get carsick. And yes, makes the time go back so much faster…I don't know what people do if they can't. The way a friend of mine deals with her spouse and reading is that they compromise and pick a book they both are interested in and then get that on audiobook and listen to it. So I guess there's that. Great post! ~Pam
ReplyDeleteI know, if I got carsick while reading I would be devastated. That's a good idea, although I'm pretty sure Phil would not go for the whole audiobook thing. I've tried reading to him and he loses interest in 0.5 seconds. Books are, sadly, not his thing.
