We've all got things in our life that we love besides books right? Other hobbies, interests, etc.? Sometimes I don't feel like I do because books take front and center stage for me, but occasionally something else will catch my eye and pull my attention away. Here are the nonbookish things I'm currently obsessed with.

I started using duolingo almost three months ago and I'm really loving it. It's a free online language learning system and there's also an app you can download so you can learn on the go (though I will say learning on the computer/full website is much better). I'm learning/relearning French. I took four years of French in high school, but I had a teacher who wasn't so great and of course, I haven't used French since graduating high school so I kind of lost it all. I really like this program because it gives you daily XP goals and once you hit them you continue on your daily "streak". You can also be friends with other people and compare your daily/weekly/monthly/all-time XP with them. It almost feels like a game. The program does a variety of things to teach you the language. It will give you a sentence in French and you'll have to type it in English. It will give you a sentence in English and you'll have to type it in French. It will just speak to you in French and you'll have to listen and translate. And it will even make you speak in French if you have a microphone equipped. I don't really use that one, but I end up just repeating everything they say and practicing speaking on my own. I really like it and I can honestly say that after almost three months of using it I probably know more French than I ever have. They have tons of languages available so there are lots of options to choose from. My husband is using it too to learn/improve on his Spanish skills!
My outdoor container garden. I planted a whole bunch of vegetables in containers a couple months ago in the hopes that they would grow. I read about what worked best and what didn't and decided to just go for it and hope for the best. Well I've got a TON of cherry tomatoes growing, though none of them are ripe yet. I also have about three red peppers growing. I planted cucumbers and the plant itself is huge and looks really healthy, but I still don't see any cucumbers growing on it so I'm not sure what's going on there. I also planted squash and zucchini against the advice of the internet. They both kind of died, but I kept watering them in the hopes I could coax them back to life. My zucchini came back and now I have three baby zucchinis growing on it! Yay! And I also have basil and oregano. The basil is completely out of control. It's huge! I wish I had a real garden so I could grow more, but not too shabby for a container garden in an apartment huh?
I'm obsessed with the band Imogen Heap. I love their eclectic sound. Their music is so different and unique and it's perfect to just chill out. I put it on in the background while I write and it just gets me into my groove. One of my favorites of theirs is called Hide & Seek:
Office supplies. I want it all. I want notebooks and pens and things to organize my office supplies. I don't know what's wrong with me. I just keep buying notebooks and pens and I bought my mom this awesome pen holder for her classroom (she's a 7th & 8th grade teacher) and all I want to do now is buy it for myself.

Jurassic Park. I still haven't seen the new one. Fail. It's not really my fault. It's the movie theater's fault because they charge out the butt for a movie until it's been in theaters like three weeks and I'm sorry, I refuse to pay $14 to see a movie that's not 3d or Imax. Are you kidding me? And I know what you're thinking. Go to a matinee. Nope. Those are like $12. Hopefully they will finally have dropped to a reasonable level this weekend. But since the movie has been so hyped and highly promoted, a bunch of TV networks have just been playing the first three on repeat. Which of course, means that I've been watching them all on repeat. I freaking love these movies. I grew up on them as a kid and it's so fun to revisit them.
So that's what I'm currently obsessing over that's not book related. What about you guys? Any cool products you're loving right now? TV shows? Movies? Music? Have you seen the new Jurassic Park movie? How was it?

I love Duolingo! I've been using it to keep up with my French as well- although I've been pretty horrible with using it recently, haven't looked at it for at least a month D: Been so busy with uni.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping they introduce a Japanese course as well- need something to help me keep up with that too. I feel like the streak feature is definitely a good motivator- makes me so competitive when I see a blank day haha
Yay! My husband wanted to learn Japanese and he started using Memrise which he said was pretty good if you wanted to try that out. The streak is the best motivator! I like get nervous thinking about having a blank day.
DeleteI use Duolingo for French too! One of my friends at school recommended it when I was getting ready to start French II, and it's been helpful for when I'm trying to review vocabulary and sentence structure.
ReplyDeleteYes, I really like it. I wish I had taken French in college, but it wasn't a requirement for me since I had taken four years in high school so dumb me was like nope. Oh well. I'll use Duo to brush up and learn some new things. :D
DeleteSo cool about your garden!!! We ahve been growing some stuff in our little garden too -- some stuff has grown. The cucumber one looks all flowery and I guess they grow underneath the flower part! I didn't know. My husband pointed it out. haha. We even ate some lettuce from the garden last week! The peppers and stuff look leafy but... I don't see any peppers yet? I'm such a newbie with the plants, I really should know more! lol.
ReplyDeleteI need to see jurassic world!!! (also magic mike)
I had no idea that the cucumber plant was so vine-like! And yes, they grow underneath the flower part. Ours is sprouting up cucumbers like crazy now so hopefully yours will soon! Our cherry tomatoes just started to ripen so we got to eat a couple the other day. Does your pepper plant have flowers yet? Mine had flowers and then the flowers turned into peppers. I really know nothing about gardening. I'm just kind of winging i. And I don't even have a real garden. Lol
DeleteOMG JURASSIC WORLD WAS SO FREAKING GOOD. YOU NEED TO GO SEE IT RIGHT NOW. I already want to see it again. Seriously, amazing. It like perfectly captured the essence from the first movie. <3333
