So I have a confession to make. I haven't reread in a really long time. Months. Maybe even years. I get so distracted by the shiny new books that I've never read that I keep putting off rereading. But before Queen of Shadows came out, I wanted to reread the entire Throne of Glass series, starting with The Assassin's Blade. And I totally forgot how much fun it is to reread. I think that after a while you forget how amazing a book is. You know that you love it, but you forget why and just how much you love it. But when you crack open that book again, you suddenly realize how much you love it. You remember the feelings you felt the first time you read it. You notice details that you either missed or had forgotten about the first time through. Rereading lets you dive back into a world that you love and revisit characters that have become your friends.
Rereading the Throne of Glass series reminded me how much I love Celaena and Sam and Chaol and Dorian and Aedion and Rowan and Abraxos and Manon. It reminded me just how amazing the world is, the writing, everything. Of course, I also got my soul and heart dragged through the mud and stomped all over again. But in the best way! It was all worth it.
And what made it even more fun was rereading with Wendy. It was so fun to trade texts, long-winded voice messages and lots of pictures of different quotes throughout the book. Which has led me to the conclusion that I need to reread more and I need to reread with friends. Because I want to have this much fun all the time! So I'm going to try harder to set the shiny new books aside every once in a while and do a reread of my favorite series/books so I can experience this euphoria again.
Do you reread a lot? What do you love the most about rereading a book?
I love to reread, I do it quite a lot almost half of the books I read last month were rereads. I especially love to reread when there is a twist in the book, as when I reread I can see the hints of that twist through the book, and think to myself 'how on earth didn't I see that coming'! I also reread Throne of Glass in August and could see all the hints of the 'big reveal' at the end of Crown of Midnight through Assassins Blade, Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight. Also in Throne of Glass there are lots of kind of repeated phrases which I don't think would be as obvious if I hadn't read them one after the other.
ReplyDeleteYes!! I love all the foreshadowing you see when you reread that you totally missed the first time through. There were so many of those moments during my reread of ToG.
DeleteI'll be honest...I don't get how people can reread books! There are too many books out there which I haven't read for me to sit back and go through the old ones again cover-to-cover. I mark up my books a lot and frequently return to the places and parts I love best, but if a book is good enough to stick in my memory, I don't feel a need to return to it and refresh that potent memory. There are a couple books I'll go through repeatedly, but those are very special books that I think speak to me on a philosophical level...it's almost a spiritual obligation to re-read them for the themes and remember how they shaped the way I decided to live my life XD
ReplyDeleteI used to think like that, but then I reread ToG and I reread a series that was one of my favorites as a kid and I just loved revisiting those worlds. But I do agree that it's hard when there are so many shiny new ones out there.
DeleteI completely agree. I rarely have time to reread but sometimes with my favorites, they make me so happy. I'm so so glad we reread this series together. I would have died without you to have read it with. YOU GET ME.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I wanted to do that reread challenge this year. I'm not actually close to my goal yet but I have reread more than I did the past year or two and I've loved it.
Kind of unrelated: I want you to read the lumatere chronicles really desperately right now.
Yes, for real. I think that's what made the reread so much fun for sure. Obviously I love the books, but it made it even better that we could gush and fangirl and freak out the whole time.
DeleteHaha I will definitely get to Lumatere Chronicles. I need to buy them.
