I stick pretty close to the YA genre. And when I say pretty close I mean that's all I read. If I see that it has an adult label on it, I shy away. Even New Adult I rarely dabble in. And you want to know why I tend to avoid the adult genre? It's because it is so excruciatingly overwhelming. There are so many genres within the adult genre and sub-genres within those genres. And then I just start hyperventilating and freak out.
I guess part of the problem is that I don't follow any blogs reviewing adult books. And I don't really know of any. It's hard when you're so immersed in the YA world. I definitely don't want to stop reading YA. I will never stop reading YA. But maybe it's time to branch out a little. Get out of my comfort zone. I feel like I'm missing out on great books.
So what should I do? Do you guys read adult books? If you do I want to know how you choose your adult books. Where do I start? I really enjoy dystopian, scifi, paranormal, and fantasy novels and I just started getting into contemporary. So give me some adult recs in these genres! And are there any great adult book blogs that I should be following?
I'm really terrible with labels, so I don't really pay attention to the genre/age group the book is labeled. I usually pick my books off of the synopsis. With that being said, I think I read some adult, some NA, and some YA pretty much equally.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to the adult books I usually focus on a genre. For example I like reading contemporary romance suspense. So I'll go to say barnesandnoble.com, click books, click romance, and then click contemporary romance suspense. From there I usually arrange the books according to best sellers (or sometimes price if I'm on a budget) and start looking at the synopsis of books.
One of my favorite adult authors recently is Kristen Ashley. I haven't read her fantasy or paranormal novels, mainly just contemporary, but for me she throws in a good mix of mystery and romance into her stories. So she's been a great read for me.
I hope this helps? That's generally how I pick books in general.
That's a good thing though! Judging labels is like judging a book by its cover, which I am super guilty of.
DeleteI will have to check out some of Kristen Ashley's stuff. If she writes fantasy, I'm in. That's one of my favorite genres.
Thanks so much for the recommendation and for the search help!
You may want to start by reading authors you already like (or at least have heard good things about) in the YA world and read their adult books. Like Richelle Mead. I really enjoyed Gameboard of the Gods and her Georgina Kincaid series. And have you read The Host? It was marketed as adult and the characters are a little older, but it definitely has cross-over appeal. One of my all-time favorite sci-fi books (and it was at a time I did not read sci-fi) is The Sparrow. Such a fantastic book. And then there's always Game of Thrones. Maybe we should try and read that one together, it's been on my kindle forever and I love the tv series. Let me know! (And I'll try to think of some others, but those are ones off the top of my head). ~Pam
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea! I know that the author of Alice in Zombieland has written a bunch of adult books. I haven't read Alice yet, but have heard great things. I have read The Host and loved it! But I felt like that was more YA than adult even though it was marketed as adult. I will definitely have to check out The Sparrow. Yes!! We should totally read GOT together! I don't have any of the books though. Once I get a new library card I will let you know and we can totally read together. I LOVE the TV show and have heard great things about the books as well. :)
DeleteOo, yey! I read the full age spectrum of sci-fi and fantasy, so I would love to recommend adult books :D. It is hard to keep track of them, but I just keep my eyes open on NetGalley and Edelweiss, along with a couple of favorite authors. For fantasy, I highly recommend Brandon Sanderson. His books have a full cast of characters, so it's a good transition from YA to adult, plus he is just an amazing fantasy writer! Mistborn is his best known book, but Elantris is also a favorite of mine :).
ReplyDeleteOooh yay! Thank you so much! I LOVE fantasy so am always looking for new books. And just based on the titles alone, I already feel like I'm going to love them. Lol. I will definitely check them out. Thanks so much!!
DeleteI read both adult and young adult books though I've only recently heard about the new adult genre so I've not read any of those! You should read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. It's an adult book but it's definitely one to appeal to YA readers as well and it's quite often classed as YA even though it's not. I've got a review on my blog if you want to check it out. It's such a magical, escapist read! The book, not my review obviously! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI've actually heard of that one! I will definitely check out your review! Thanks for the rec!
DeleteI actually used to read a ton of adult fiction, well thats all I read really because I only discovered YA shortly before I started blogging but lately there are quite a few adult fiction books that I want to try as well! I know Cass has some awesome adult recommendations, and so does Hannah @ So Obsessed With. Those ladies are actually where I get my adult recommendations as of late :P
ReplyDeleteKelley Armstrong also writes a ton of adult fiction, and it's all paranormal as well. The Woman of the Otherworld is about shapeshifters, I have the first book but haven't read it yet... https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11918.Bitten?ac=1
AND A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness is AMAZING. It's one of my favorite series EVER, and it's paranormal and lovely! Black Dagger Brotherhood is another paranormal adult series that everyone is talking a lot about online.Gillian Flynn writes awesome books, they are like thrillers and total mind f**ks honestly but SOOOO good. AND (last one I swear) Lisa Scottoline has amazing standalones. I've read nearly all of her stand alones and have never been disappointed. I used to read ALOT of chicklit as well, so if you are interested in that genre let me know because I can give you a ton of recommendations!!!
That is seriously the longest comment ever. Sorry about that Rebecca :P
Thank you for the amazing comment!!! And all the recs! I definitely want to check out the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Kelly and Alexa rave about that series. Apparently there are hot vampires so naturally I need to read them. I will definitely be checking out A Discovery of Witches. Just looked it up on Goodreads and it sounds really good! Also the cover is so pretty!!! I love mind f**ks so I will check out Gillian Flynn. You're amazing!!! Thanks again for all the awesome recs! You're the best!
