Synopsis from Goodreads:

James is skilled, efficient, and deadly, a hired blade navigating the shifting alliances of a deteriorating Assassin’s Guild. Then he meets Thalia, an alluring but troubled dancing girl who offers him a way out—if he’ll help her kill a powerful nobleman. With the Guild falling apart, it just might be worth the risk. But when you live, breathe, and love in a world that’s forever flirting with death, the slightest misstep can be poison.

My Review:

I don’t normally read novellas. They just don’t interest me. I always feel like there’s not enough time for the story to be told. That’s just my personal opinion. So when the author of this one approached me, asking me if I would like to review her novella, my first instinct was to say no. However, I already had the first novel in this series, Midnight Thief, on my wishlist. The series itself sounded so interesting to me that I had to agree just so I could get a sneak peek into this world.

I’m glad I accepted. The tiny glimpse we get of this world, with the Assassin’s Guild and the politically corrupt “wallhuggers” (i.e. noblemen) was enough to draw me into the story and make me doubly excited for the first book. The main character was so interesting. James was dark and mysterious. He had that veiled air about him that of course made me fall in love in less than 100 pages. The girl, Thalia, was also an interesting character. She was fierce, determined, and I loved how close she was to her sister.

Overall, the story, short as it was, was interesting and action-packed. It gave us a great introduction to the world and to the types of characters we might encounter. My only complaint is that I wish there was more. As I always feel with novellas. The author wrapped everything up, but I had already fallen in love with the characters and therefore wanted more of their story. Happy reading all!

Let's talk! Have you read this one yet? Are you looking forward to Midnight Thief?

  1. This sounds like a great novella! I usually read the novellas after reading the actual book though, so I'll keep it in mind if I end up reading Midnight Thief :)

  2. I think Novellas are a good way to enrich the world, although I'm very picky about which ones I read.....

    1. You don't need to read this one I don't think. I don't even think that the characters in this novella are in the book. But it was a fun, super quick read. It's free for Kindle if you're interested. :)
