So last weekend I went to go see The Fault in Our Stars. I really wanted to go opening weekend, but I was in Boston for a friend's bachelorette party/bridal shower (which was awesome!), but didn't get a chance to see the movie. So I dragged my husband last weekend (he was NOT happy about it...). I went armed with tissues and the expectation that I was going to sob my eyes out.
When I read the book, I full on ugly cried. It was one of those stories that snuck up on me. Much like Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace's love. I didn't realize that I had fallen in love with the characters and their story until all of a sudden I was sobbing my eyes out.
I had actually seen the trailer prior to reading the book. No tears. Then I read the book. Then I rewatched the trailer and cried through the whole thing. Oh boy. So needless to say, I sobbed through the whole movie. The guy on the other side of me (not Phil) kept looking over at me and I just wanted to scream at him and say "yes, I will be ugly crying during this whole thing so stop staring at me!"
But anyway. The movie. It was so good. Seriously one of the best book to movie adaptations I have ever seen. Maybe even better than the Catching Fire adaptation. It was so true to the book, followed the story so closely, had so many quotes taken direct from the book. It was like watching the book itself play out before my eyes. The actors did an incredible job. I was not a huge Shailene Woodley fan pre-Divergent. I was actually pretty upset about her getting cast in that movie. But then she did a fantastic job. And so I accepted her as Hazel Grace. And she blew it out of the water. She was perfect. She was honest. She was angry. She was real. She was... perfect. There's no other words to describe it.
And Ansel Elgort as Gus. Nailed it. I thought it would be weird seeing them together romantically after they played brother and sister in Divergent, but it wasn't. It totally worked. It more than worked. It was perfect. I know. I've used that word way too many times and you're all going seriously, get a thesaurus. But I'm not kidding when I say there's no better word for it.
This is a movie that I will watch over and over again. But not right in a row, because then my eyes would be swollen shut from all the crying. If you haven't seen it yet, go. If you haven't read the book yet, read it and then go see this. It isn't easy to read about it and it isn't easy to watch, but the story is so beautiful and so worth it. This is a story that deserves to be read. Deserves to be watched. Deserves to be listened to.
I definitely agree, TFIOS is probably the best YA adaptation I've ever seen! Catching Fire was good, but wow TFIOS.
ReplyDeleteYES THE CASTING WAS AMAZING. Shailene and Ansel were both perfect (definitely no other word needed to describe it).
You know, I find it really weird whenever people are like "but they play brother and sister in Divergent!" because that's what actors do. They adapt to play different characters. E.g. you don't watch Silver Linings Playbook and go wait. What's Katniss doing in this movie?! Or even Silver Linings Playbook vs American Hustle. Bradley Cooper and JLaw are in both of those, and there aren't really any people going "but they play lovers in the other movie!" haha I don't know, I just find it strange.
I know it was so freaking good!!! *fangirls everywhere*
DeleteYeah, I agree. They are just actors. It's not like they actually feel like they have a brother/sister relationship or they actually feel a romantic connection. They are just playing a part.
I told my husband that 'going to the movies' wasn't an accurate description of what I did that night. 'Wept openly with strangers' is way more fitting. :P
ReplyDeleteI also really thought the casting would be awkward because of Divergent, and I agree: not a problem at all. They were 'perfect.'
Lol truth. I was seriously ugly crying. Snot everywhere. It was intense. Lol
Delete:D perfect, perfect, perfect!
I agree, the movie was such a great adaptation of the book. And yes, the actors nailed their roles, they did such a great job. I don't think I could see it again, though, it was so emotional and sad, but I did love it. ~Pam
ReplyDeleteTrue. I need a few months to recover before watching it again. My eyes are still recovering. And my heart. And my husband. I don't think he can take me crying so much again. Lol.
