Synopsis
from Goodreads:
If high school is all
about social status, Indigo Blackwood has it made. Sure, her quirky mom owns an
occult shop, and a nerd just won’t stop trying to be her friend, but Indie is a
popular cheerleader with a football-star boyfriend and a social circle powerful
enough to ruin everyone at school. Who wouldn’t want to be her?
Then a guy dies right before her eyes. And the dusty old family Bible her mom is freakishly possessive of is stolen. But it’s when a frustratingly sexy stranger named Bishop enters Indie’s world that she learns her destiny involves a lot more than pom-poms and parties. If she doesn’t get the Bible back, every witch on the planet will die. And that’s seriously bad news for Indie, because according to Bishop, she’s a witch too.
Suddenly forced into a centuries-old war between witches and sorcerers, Indie’s about to uncover the many dark truths about her life—and a future unlike any she ever imagined on top of the cheer pyramid.
My
Review:
This book was so much
fun! It was the perfect balance of mystery, hilarity and steaminess. The cast
of characters was great. I loved the main character, Indie. She was so honest
and down-to-earth. I loved her relationship with her mother and how quick she was
to defend her. I’m not a cheerleader person. I never really understood the
whole cheerleading thing, but Indie is so not your “typical” cheerleader. I
loved how different and quirky she was. This is a girl that I could easily
become best friends with. She’s a little shallow at first and definitely has
her flaws, but give her a chance and I think she’ll impress you.
The paranormal aspect
of this story was very interesting. I can’t wait to learn more about the
witches and how everything works. We didn’t learn too much in this book, but it
was enough to satisfy me while also leaving me wanting more. I can’t wait to
see what other abilities Indie will gain as she practices more and gets better.
Speaking of which, I love that it wasn’t easy for her. The author really makes
Indie work for her powers and I loved that. It felt realistic.
I do wish that the
secondary characters had been a bit more developed. Especially Bishop. I
definitely think that he has the potential to be swoon-worthy, but I just
didn’t feel like I knew him well enough to swoon over him. But he’s got all the
characteristics I love in a book boyfriend. He’s a warlock. Check. Snarky and
arrogant. Check. Bad boy vibe. Check. Leather jacket. Check. Yep. He’s got high
swoon potential. I hope we get to know him better in the next book so I can
fall in love with him. I was nearly there in this book, but he just didn’t
quite capture my heart.
Great start to this new
series. Michelle’s debut was fun and quirky with just a touch of darkness and
mystery. I can’t wait to read more from this author and find out what happens
next with these characters. Happy reading all!
Let's talk! Have you read this one yet? What did you think of the paranormal aspect? The main character? Were you swooning over Bishop as well?
Mystery, hilarity, and steaminess…sounds like my kind of book. I keep seeing great reviews for this one so I need to move it up the TBR list. I hate that you didn't feel like you got to know the love interest…that's been happening to me a lot lately, I feel. If a book doesn't have the guy's POV, it takes a certain talent for enough of his personality to be shown to the reader so we fall in love with him. Not that many authors can do that, to be honest. Great review! ~Pam
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think you'll like it! It's a different kind of paranormal. A bit fluffy at times. So fun! Yeah, same here. But then on the other hand with the alternating POVs I often have a difficult time distinguishing between character voices... *sigh* never happy am I? Lol
DeleteOo, Bishops does seem very swoony! I'm not a huge fan of witch books, but this one is pretty high on my TBR list. Awesome review though!
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't really feel like a witch book so I think you'll enjoy it. More like a contemporary with a side of witch. Lol.
