The Story:
Annith has watched her
gifted sisters at the convent come and go, carrying out their dark
dealings in the name of St. Mortain, patiently awaiting her own turn to
serve Death. But her worst fears are realized when she discovers she is
being groomed by the abbess as a Seeress, to be forever sequestered in
the rock and stone womb of the convent. Feeling sorely betrayed, Annith
decides to strike out on her own.
She has spent her whole life training to be an assassin. Just because the convent has changed its mind doesn't mean she has.
But across Brittany, the tides of war are drawing ever nearer, with France pressuring the beleaguered duchess from all sides. Annith’s search for answers threatens to rip open an intricate web of lies and deceit that sit at the heart of the convent she serves. Yet to expose them threatens the very fabric of her existence and risks an unforeseen chance at love, one that she can no longer deny. Why You Should Be Stoked:
ANNITH! Oh my gosh, Annith was so amazing. She is by far my favorite of the three girls (Ismae and Sybella being the other two). While they each have their own distinctive personalities that I love, I just fell in love with Annith and her story.
The swoon. Oh man, the swoon. The romantic interest in this book is amazing! Duval is still my favorite, but this one gave him a run for his money.
The politics. I absolutely LOVED all the historical detail and the politics of the war between France and Brittany. It was interesting to read about this period in history that I know very little about. And it definitely makes me want to learn more.
The friendship. We get to see all three girls together again!! Yay!! After two books of separation it was so nice to see these young women together again. To really see how strong their friendship is. Loved loved loved this aspect of the book.
If you haven't started this series yet, get going! Historical fiction mixed with brilliant fantasy. It's assassin nuns. How cool is that? Happy reading all!

I am so excited for this! And I'm glad to hear you loved Annith's character. I loved her character from Grave Mercy, but I was so nervous to read a different POV that it took me awhile to pick up Dark Triumph- and I loved that one a lot as well! I was a bit nervous about yet another new narrator, but Annith's awesome and I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm super excited!

DeleteI did enjoy this one, especially Annith and seeing all three women together. To be honest, though, I don't know how I feel about the romance. SPOILERS FOR OTHERS SO DON'T READ ANY MORE. I mean, that whole part of the entire series always had such a paranormal aspect to it that I never knew how I felt about it anyway and then....he's their father???? What? I don't know, a bit creepy, if you ask me. Made it hard to swoon for me, but part of me thought it was sweet. I don't know. But I did really like the book, I just had a hard time with that.
