Discussion Post: The Agony of Waiting

You all know what I'm about to rant about. Because as fellow book lovers, you understand the pain. The torture. The life-ruining, heart-wrenching, soul-crushing feeling that you get at the end of an amazing book that's part of a series. While experiencing these horrendous emotions, you also experience immense joy at the epic awesomeness that you just experienced. This mixture of emotions leaves you feeling empty, confused, maybe even a little scared.

Why are you feeling this way? Because you just read an awesome book and you want the next one right this very second. Unfortunately for you, it takes time to write a novel. Therefore, you're in for a long wait... Sometimes this feeling of desperation is stronger with certain books.

Take Heir of Fire for example. I finished that book and felt immense joy and a bit of disbelief. My heart was racing from the stunning race to the end. I sat there with the book in my hands going "holy sh** that was so f***ing amazing!". And then a realization began to crash down on me. A horrible, gut-wrenching realization. I now have to wait over a year before the next one.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

This is agony. I mean seriously, if the government wants to learn how to properly torture someone, they should make them read this series and any others that end on cliffhangers and then refuse to give them the next book. I mean, that would work on me. I would sell all of you out to get my hands on a copy of the 4th book. Sorry not sorry.

And this is why there's a huge part of me that kind of just wants to wait to start a new series until all the books are out and then binge read them. But then I would miss out on the collective group of bloggers/readers that are reading the book. I love being able to gush over stuff with you guys. I mean I seriously LOVE IT. So I can't just wait. Plus I have zero self-control so even if I say I'm going to wait, I'll cave and read it anyway. Especially if all of you are gushing over it.

So what's a girl to do? I guess I'll just write ranty posts like this that I know all of you will understand so we can share in our misery together. I'm going to go eat a quart of ice cream now and cry over the wait for a million different books. (But let's be honest, mostly Throne of Glass #4...). What do you do to fill the time in between books?

  1. I haaaate waiting. The waits kill me but if I've started the series, it's hard for me NOT to snap up the next book! I've hung on this long with HoF haha but it'll be my next read. :)

  2. I cannot keep from reading new series, but I wish I could because so many end in horrible cliffhangers!!!! And we have to wait a year???? It's brutal. And then I don't remember so I have to reread or if I don't I generally don't like the next book as much because I'm not connected anymore or I'm just so lost. THESE SERIES ARE KILLING ME!!!!! ~Pam

    1. I know!!!! And then I think about like adult fantasy books and I think we shouldn't even complain. The book I'm reading right now is adult fantasy and there's two books out so far, but there's not even a release date for the third one!!! And the Game of Thrones books take forever. Years and years to write those. Insanity. So I guess we should be thankful that generally it's only a year wait for us? But it still sucks!!!!

  3. Hahaha, new torture technique, that would totally work on me. I seriously can't stand cliff-hangers when I have to wait a long time before I can get my hands on the sequel.

    1. haha right! It would totally work on me. If they were like "if you tell us this information, you can have the next book in the Throne of Glass series" I would break in less than a second. lol

  4. OMG this happens waaaaaayyy too much for me, mostly when it's a huge cliffhanger and you're right it is GUT-WRENCHING!

Side note: I realized something that I had no idea before your post: Heir of Fire is not the last book in that series?!?! I was planning on waiting till it was finished to start bahaha. Wow, I don't know how that went over my head :S

I totally agree, I wish that I wouldn't read some series but then there is no gushing and I would definitely just go pick it up anyway depsite saying, No my heart I will wait!!!

    It's a neverending circle haha.

    1. haha that's okay! you're not the only one that thought that! I have another friend who was saying the same thing and I was all like "um...you do know there's six books right?" and she was floored. She immediately started the series. Lol.

But I have no self-control when it comes to waiting. The problem when I do wait is that even once the last book comes out I procrastinate on reading it... :/
