Top Ten New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2014

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish where we make lists of bookish things!

One of my favorite things about the end of the year are all the "best of" lists that start to make an appearance. And this week we are talking about the magical people known as authors. The people who work hard to give us the books that allow us to escape from the real world for a few hours. I have so much love and respect for authors. Here's the top ten new-to-me authors I read in 2014:

I definitely need to check out Colleen Hoover's other books. But I fell in love with Hopeless. I mean, Dean f***ing Holder. How can you go wrong??

Winterspell is a book that I will push on people for all eternity. Definitely in my top five favorite books of 2014. Claire Legrand weaved a wonderfully original tale and I can't wait to read more from her!

I finally read Code Name Verity this year. Bawled my eyes out. And immediately wanted to reread it. Elizabeth Wein told a beautiful tale of friendship. "Kiss me, Hardy! Kiss me quick!" *sobs*

Yes, I discovered JLA this year. I read White Hot Kiss, Stone Cold Touch, Don't Look Back, the entire Covenant series, and The Return. Yes. It was the year of JLA. Next year is sure to be no different as I still need to binge read the Lux series, her contemporary stuff and of course, Wicked. JLA is a master of words. My only regret is not reading her stuff sooner.

One Past Midnight surprised me so much. I didn't quite expect to fall in love with it as much as I did. It was such a unique story. I fell in love with the main character and sped through the pages. I will definitely be reading more of Jessica's stuff in the future.

Oh, this book. I remember trying desperately to get my hands on an ARC of The Winner's Curse. It didn't happen. I was devastated. (not really, but pretty sad) And then I finally got my shiny finished copy, read it and just fell in love with Kestrel and Arin's story. I am dying to get my hands on The Winner's Crime!!

A friend convinced me to give The Name of the Wind a try and I am so happy I did. This story is so unique. The main character is amazing and I am dying to read more. The second book is definitely getting read in 2015.

I think A Mad, Wicked Folly was one of the first books I read in 2014 and it has stuck to my "best of 2014" list in my head all year. I have book-pushed this on many people and I am not sorry about it. Women's suffragette movement in London. Awesome, independent, courageous main character. And a super swoony guy named Will. Read it. And I will most definitely be on the lookout for more from Ms. Waller.

Snow Like Ashes was such an amazing start to a new fantasy series! I loved the different season kingdoms vs. rhythm kingdoms. The main character was pretty epic. And Prince Theron. That is all. If you like fantasy, read it, and sit here with me anxiously awaiting the second one.

Another book that completely surprised me. I fell in love with Far From You. It was a heartbreaking tale of love. I really enjoyed the thriller aspect. The relationship. Everything about this was amazing. Can't wait for more from Tess Sharpe!

Honorable Mention (because I can't pick just 10):

I just read Trial by Fire a few weeks ago and it was amazing!! I loved the magic and the science. The witches. The romance. The world. Everything was amazing and I can't wait to get my hands on the second one and more from Josephine Angelini!

I read Half Bad pretty early in the year, but I absolutely loved it. It was a dark book filled with witches, magic, and torture. But despite that darkness, there was a sense of hope. Nathan was a fighter and I found him inspiring. I am so excited to see where the series is going to go next!

That's all I got, guys! Which authors made your list?

  1. JLA and Jessica Shirvington!!!! Two of my all time favorite authors. You have to read more Jessica Shirvington. The Embrace series…I can't rave enough about it and it's all out! Binge read!!! And then Disruption and Corruption. Such an amazing duology!!! My review for Corruption (with no spoilers) is scheduled to post tomorrow. I loved Disruption so much that I ordered Corruption from fishpond because there's no US release date yet and I just couldn't wait. Seriously. I'm pushing Jessica Shirvington. Since you love JLA, you will LOVE the rest of her books. She and JLA are the masters at creating characters you become emotionally involved in. And the guys…oh man. I know you will love the two guys in the Embrace series. And if I know you, I know which one you will love (and of course I love the other one). Just thinking about that series makes me want to reread it. I think it's the fourth book where I literally sobbed for the last 10 chapters. I never do that. Ok, hopefully I've convinced you!!! :) ~Pam

    1. I knew you'd be excited to see Jessica Shirvington on here. :) I definitely want to read the Embrace series. Maybe I will get it for Christmas. Or I'll just buy it for myself as an after Christmas present. Lol. I'm very excited to meet these guys and see if I like the one you think I'll like. Probably whichever one is the bad boy huh? You've definitely convinced me. I will make it a goal to read them next year!

  4. First of all, I love this format. I'm really looking forward to reading Snow Like Ashes, but haven't actually gotten to it yet. I wasn't overly impressed with Half Bad, but I am looking forward to Half Wild. I'm definitely curious about what's in store for Nathan. You have a really great list this week!

    1. Thank you! It's very good! I think Half Wild is going to be even darker (if that's possible). I just have this feeling that Nathan is going to be experimenting more with his black witch side.

  6. There are several on your list that I have yet to read, and I own these books!! Snow Like Ashes is one of them! Also, can't wait to read Winterspell and A Mad, Wicked Folly! Rutkoski's books are fantastic--she has written some wonderful middle grade fantasy. They're really good as audio books.

    1. Story of a bookworm's life, huh? So many books that I own and haven't read yet. Fail. Winterspell and A Mad, Wicked Folly are seriously two of my favorite books I read all year. They are both incredible!!! I hope you enjoy them when you get to them! I don't typically read middle grade, but I know a lot of people that do so I'll definitely pass along the rec!
