Discussion Post: Choosing Your Next Read

You know what's really hard? That moment when you finish a book and then look around and wonder what to read next. This decision isn't hard for lack of choices...

Seriously. Are you kidding me? I'm a book blogger. I've got plenty of choices. Currently 162 choices.

162 BOOKS TO CHOOSE FROM??? How will I ever decide what to read next? So you tell me to narrow it down to a genre, say fantasy. I still probably have at least 30 books to choose from. Why does this decision have to be so hard??

So most of the time, I just sit there, staring at all my books, hyperventilating slightly at the sheer number of books in my home, and unable to decide what the heck to read. I've tried having my husband choose for me, but then he gets mad because I reject everything he chooses. Lol. Fail.

These are the tough decisions I have to contend with in my life. Can someone say #firstworldproblems?

Sidenote: Let's be honest, we've all been that guy before.

So how do I decide what to read next in the mess of books I have in my life? I first decide if I want an ebook or a real book. From there I decide if I want a review copy or an older release. And then I normally choose at random. I've told you before that I'm not a mood reader so I'm never really "in the mood" for anything in particular which makes my decision making that much harder. Sometimes I choose a couple books and read the synopses to my sister and let her decide. That's how I chose the book I'm currently reading.

And sometimes, when all else fails, I close my eyes and play eenie-meenie-minie-mo.

How do you decide which book to read next?

  1. Yeah, that sounds about right ;) I usually don't have a hard time choosing what to read next, cause I have terrible eARC-guilt and then I just go and pick my next read from that list. The problem only arises when I find myself with time to actually read one of the books I've bought myself and then I'm like ...... NOW WHAT??? And lots of staring at my shelves follows...

    1. Yes, when my schedule is full of egalleys it's easy because then I can read by a schedule based on release date. But when my schedule is open then it's agonizing... yep, lots of staring at my shelves.

  2. Usually it depends on when a library book is due or how many ARCs I have or when a book's review is due. For my personal reads, beyond library books, it depends on if it's a new release, when I bought it, or my mood. I try not to let my stack of owned but unread books pile up, but it's been happening lately with all the other books I need to read.

    1. I used to be so good with the books that I own and haven't read. But then I got a little egalley happy (who doesn't?) and now my own-to-be-read is just insane and ridiculous. I have too many books to choose from and it makes my reading decisions soooo hard!!!

  3. I'm a mood reader and usually it's by genre. So maybe I'm in the mood for fantasy or NA or paranormal or whatever. From there I'll just pick the one I'm most excited to read. Sadly, because of that, sometimes I'm in the mood for a book that I don't own already, even though I own a ton of books I haven't read yet, and I'll buy a book just because I'm in the mood for that book. So, yeah, some people would think that's crazy. If I'm really not sure what to read, I'll start a book and if I don't get into it immediately, I put it down, pick up a new book, read a chapter or two, and if I don't get into it, put it down, and go the next one. That doesn't happen too often, though. It is kind of sad when I shuffle through my Kindle, stare at my bookshelves, and think, "I'm not in the mood for any of these!!!" ~Pam

    1. Haha, bookworm problems right? I know, sometimes I like at all my books and go "I don't want to read any of these." How is that possible???? I'm so bad at quitting books so I never really do the whole read a chapter and then put it down thing.

  4. I'm a total mood reader. I go where my mood takes me. haha. I just finished binging the bloodlines series and am kind of in a slump after that. I have no idea what to read. I may have to go for my way overdue library book that I JUST remembered I still have. :/ oops.

    1. I hate that. When you finish an awesome series and then you just don't feel like reading anything else.
