My
Review:
Holy shitballs. I just finished
this book and I am reeling. Slayed. Destroyed. Dead. No way am I going to
survive the wait for the next book. Because that ending was too cruel. Too
cliffhangery. Too horrible. I’m babbling aren’t I?
Okay. So I really loved
the first book in this series Red Rising.
Thought it was pretty darn incredible. But its sequel, Golden Son, makes its predecessor look like child’s play. I’m not
saying the first book is bad. It’s not. It was so good. But this one just
completely blew it out of the water, much like Heir of Fire blew ToG and
CoM out of the water.
This is technically
adult fiction, I believe, but it’s definitely a good cross-over series. While
the first one read more like YA, this one definitely has a more adult feel. The
plotlines are super complex and the language is pretty high level, so just be
prepared for that. This book is LONG. As in, it took me like 8 hours to get
through it. Goodreads says the print copy is only 464 pages, but for some
reason it took me forever. Maybe that’s because I was reading more slowly so I
could capture all the details, all the politics, all the characters, every
perfect twist. You’re going to want to read this one slowly. If you don’t, you’ll
surely miss something.
Action, action and more
action. Your mind will be blown at all the vicious battles, personal showdowns
and just everything else that is going on in this book. But it’s also not so
action-packed that it lacks other things such as character development. All of
that good stuff is there too. Darrow grew a lot in the first book, but he grew
even more in this one. He truly is becoming a leader. The people believe in
him, trust him, love him and it was really cool to watch Darrow realize what
that meant. The responsibility that came with that. Darrow isn’t perfect. He
can be selfish, but I think that’s what makes him such an interesting
character.
And it’s not just
Darrow. It’s Sevro, Roque, Mustang, the Jackal, Tactus, Quinn, Fitchner,
Octavia, Augustus, Cassius, Dancer, Ares himself. Let’s just say there are a
lot of characters and they are all equal parts awesome/deliciously villainous.
After reading this
book, I am praying to the film gods that this series gets picked up and done
right. I think that this story would be AMAZING on the big screen. Seriously,
it would be epic. With all the space. The battles. I need this to happen.
My favorite part of
this book? The politics. Agreeing with the synopsis, this definitely has a Game of Thrones feel to it. There is so
much corruption and everyone truly does have their own agenda. It’s impossible
to figure out who you can trust or what’s going to happen next. Which is why
the ending will tear you open and leave you bleeding, wondering where the hell
this story goes from here. Read this series if you like sci-fi, politics,
strong world-building and strong characters. Hell, just read this book because
I said so.
