Books I Swear I'm Finally Going to Read In 2016

I promise a lot of things in regards to reading. Every year I have this huge list of books that I swear I'm going to get to and then the end of the year rolls around and I've read maybe two from that list. It's not my fault. Not really. I blame those shiny new books that the entire world is talking about. If everyone else is talking about it, I have to see what it's all about! So I pick up the shiny, tempting new book and let the ones I've been meaning to get to continue to collect dust on my shelves. Poor, poor books. But I am putting a stop to this behavior this year! And I need your help to do it! Basically, I'm enlisting all of you to hold me accountable. Wendy has promised to help me with at least one of these, though I'm sure she's going to be helping me with at least two... And I need the rest of you to help me actually accomplish my goals this year. What do you say? Are you in? Excellent!

Let's just get this over with...

No. 1: Harry Potter

*ducks in cover* I know, I know! What is wrong with me??? Okay, I have a sort of good excuse. We weren't allowed to read HP when I was a kid. I grew up in a pretty religious family and my parents did not approve of the "witchcraft" in the books. Sigh. So I was deprived. And now that I'm an adult (am I?) and can make my own decisions I just haven't gotten around to it. For the past two years, I've been saying that I'm going to start the series and the past two years I just...haven't. But never fear, my friends! 2016 is the year I pop my HP cherry! Wendy is on this one - but it won't hurt to have the rest of you harassing me about it either. Help me learn what a muggle is!

No. 2: The Mara Dyer Series

My mom got me this entire series for Christmas. Last year. As in 2014. And they are still sitting on my shelf collecting dust. Ugh. What is wrong with me??? I've heard nothing but excellent things about this series and yet, I still can't seem to pick it up. I am such a failure. Somebody please yell at me to read this series!!

No. 3: The Lumatere Chronicles

This is the other one I'm pretty sure Wendy will push on me, but I need more harassment from you guys. Everybody I know who has read this series has loved it. I mean LOVED it. After my Queen of Shadows heartbreak, I really need another fantasy series to fall in love with and I think this may be the one.

No. 4: Mistborn

Or really just any Brandon Sanderson, but I happen to have the first book in the Mistborn series so I'll probably start there. I keep hearing great things about Sanderson and I consume every fantasy I can get my hands on so why the hell haven't I picked up his books?? I wish I could tell you darlings. I really do. But alas, I have no good excuse.

No. 5: The Book Thief

Another book I'm embarrassed to admit I haven't read. I am baring all of my bookish embarrassments right now, people. I hope you appreciate it and can picture me hiding behind my computer in shame. I love historical fiction, especially of the WWII variety. And this book is narrated by death which sounds awesome and pretty much everybody and their mom has read it and love it so... again...what the heck is wrong with me? This year, I swear it.

Okay, I'm only going to do five because four of these are series and that's a lot of books to commit to and I can already feel my noncommittal self screaming in terror. Which is why I desperately need your help. I respond well to threats and offers of pizza. Or food in general. I'm pretty easy.

Which ones are you going to take responsibility for and push on me? Are there any of these that you need to read too? Do you want to read together? Please tell me there are more Harry Potter virgins out there and that I'm not alone.

  1. You and I are alike when it comes to the HP series! I wasn't allowed to read it when I was growing up because of having a very religious family (I'm still a Christian) and the whole "witchcraft" thing (even though all the spells in the books are just kind of latin words, I believe)! I finally read the series back in 2013 or 2014!
I'm starting "Finnikin of the Rock" within the next couple of days and I'm NERVOUS, because so many people have read it and loved it! People have bugged me to read it also.
OMG, I LOVED "THE BOOK THIEF"!! Max Vandenburg <3 I LOVE that character soooo much!!

    1. I know. I grew up in a very religious family and am still a Christian, but now I know it's harmless. I'm excited to finally join the rest of the world and see what all the fuss is about.

I hope you enjoy the Lumatere Chronicles! I hear there are lots of awesome ships!

  2. Wow, I grew up in a family that was happy to have me reading whatever I wanted, an in a very liberal area. I don't know anyone who wasn't allowed to read Harry Potter. It seemed kind of impossible that anybody would have a problem with it! From our perspective, it was just a bunch of latin spells and no more harmful than dressing up as a witch for Halloween or reading a book about mermaids. I'm actually kind of glad to know you (and some of your other readers here, I see) didn't have the chance to read it. So this is what it would have been like to grow up without Harry Potter. I hope you enjoy it, although...I almost feel like it couldn't possibly live up to the hype (and yet it does!)

That aside, this looks like a great reading list. I should make a similar one for myself this year :)

    1. Yeah, I don't know. I see it as pretty harmless. It's just a bunch of kids performing spells. Not like I was going to turn into a witch from reading it, but oh well. I'm excited and nervous to read it. What if I don't like it?? I think the internet will disown me.

  3. HP HP HP! I read the first in 2014 and then this fall I read the 2nd, 3rd and 4th and planning to do book 5 soon!! I am flying through them when I actually sit down to read!

ALSO OMG LUMETERE CHRONICLES IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES SO THIS NEEDS TO BE PRIORITY.

And The Book Thief. OH MAN. I read this before I started blogging and I vividly remember the experience. SOBBING AT 2AM. It's amazing.

    1. Yay!! I'm so excited to finally get to it. But also kind of nervous because the pressure. THE PRESSURE, JAMIE. But I'm glad to hear you're loving it. I'm only a little worried about the first couple because I'm worried it will sound too young. I don't read middle grade for that exact reason. But I'm sure I'll be fine.

I officially nominate you as my 2nd Lumatere Chronicles book pusher! I need more people kicking my butt into gear. :)

I'm sure I'm going to be a puddle when I finally read The Book Thief. I've heard so many good things about it.

  5. Yay for reading Harry Potter! I'm planning to reread the series this year, which is something I'm super excited about. It's been a while since I've actually read the series, and even though I know the story so, so well, I feel like it'd be fun to revisit. And also, I'm excited for you to read The Lumatere Chronicles (brilliant!) and The Book Thief (so moving!).

  6. LOOOOOL this made me laugh. I always have the MUST-GET-TO-!!!! Books every year, normally the ones that have already been sitting around a couple years O_O You've got to read HP!! Even if it turns out you don't like it, the fandom and theories surrounding it are SO HUGE that it will 100% enrich your experience as a reader or writer.

Mistborn was my MUST-GET-TO-!!!! on 2015 aaaaaand.... I didn't get to it, embarrassed to say. But THIS YEAR DEFINITELY!! Because my siblings are driving me crazy with Haveyoureadityet? Haveyoureadityet? Also I haven't got stuck in a fantasy series in a while, and as a fantasy genre blogger that's pretty dismal. e_e

I'm glad you put Book Thief because I forgot about that one. Adding it to the pile now. Thanks! ^ . ^

    1. Glad I could make you laugh. I know, I always make these grand lists of books I swear I'm going to read, but then I don't get to them. This year I'm determined though! I actually just finished The Book Thief this weekend so I'm able to check one off! And I swear I'm going to get to HP. It's so embarrassing that I haven't read it yet... for real.

I just really need to read a Sanderson novel. I am such a huge fantasy fan and yet I haven't read any of his stuff. Fail. Here's to us finally getting to Mistborn this year!

    2. Whoo! Go you on reading the Book Thief. That was high up on my list about two years ago, then after I remembered I wanted to read LOTR and The Hobbit, Patrick Rothfuss, Peter V. Brett and Mark Lawrence, it slipped so far down I honestly don't see me getting round to that by 2018, lolol.

Guess what!! I just finished Mistborn book 1 o_o It's so good!! I wish I could buy the boxset now, but I'm just a little student. XD I really hope you enjoy it when you get to it THEN WE CAN DISCUSS O_O

    3. Thanks! You should move it back up your list. It was sooooo good! It's going to be one of those books that sticks with me for a really long time.

Yay!! So happy to hear that you loved Mistborn! I'm going to have to save some money for when I read it so I can be prepared to buy the rest of the series. We will definitely discuss once I read it! I think I'm going to get to it in February. I have a couple review books to get through and then I'm doing a series reread and then after that hopefully I get to it. :)

    1. I just finished The Book Thief over the weekend! I'm not sure I want to see the movie because I've heard it's terrible. Have you seen it?

And yes, I'm going to binge the entire Harry Potter series and then have a movie weekend and just binge all the movies.

  8. I'm the same way, I always have a list I *have* to get to... why is it so hard to make this happen?! I really hope you enjoy Harry Potter! I grew up with the series and it's a forever favorite, always happy to see new people reading it :) The Lumatere Chronicles is on my list this year! I bought Finnikin with a gift card so I'm going to give it a whirl.

    1. I know. It's so difficult! It's like if I write them down I avoid them. Lol But I'm bound and determined this year! I already read one book from the list (The Book Thief) so I'm feeling good about my success rate.

I hope I enjoy HP! If I don't, I think the book community will disown me. Lol

I've heard nothing but good things about Lumatere Chronicles. Hope you enjoy!

HP, OBVIOUSLY. it'll always be the series of my heart and I really hope you like it. LUMATERE. I, also, hope that this will help fill your fantasy series void since QoS killed everything.
