Synopsis from Goodreads:

Your heart beats only with their permission.

Everything changed on The Day. The day the windows shattered. The day the power stopped. The day Dol's family dropped dead. The day Earth lost a war it didn't know it was fighting.

Since then, Dol has lived a simple life in the countryside -- safe from the shadow of the Icon and its terrifying power. Hiding from the one truth she can't avoid.

She's different. She survived. Why?

When Dol and her best friend, Ro, are captured and taken to the Embassy, off the coast of the sprawling metropolis once known as the City of Angels, they find only more questions. While Ro and fellow hostage Tima rage against their captors, Dol finds herself drawn to Lucas, the Ambassador's privileged son. But the four teens are more alike than they might think, and the timing of their meeting isn't a coincidence. It's a conspiracy.

Within the Icon's reach, Dol, Ro, Tima, and Lucas discover that their uncontrollable emotions -- which they've always thought to be their greatest weaknesses -- may actually be their greatest strengths.

Bestselling author Margaret Stohl delivers the first book in a heart-pounding series set in a haunting new world where four teens must piece together the mysteries of their pasts -- in order to save the future.

My Review:

Omg guys. This was so freaking good. The story was so different than anything I have ever read. I love science fiction (nerd alert) so this book was perfect for me. It has aliens, a corrupt government, action, science, and a little bit of love to spice things up. I ate this book up.

Basic premise of this story is that aliens, the Lords, have taken over the world and have pretty much enslaved us using these things called Icons that emit crazy amounts of energy. One thing I wanted to know more about were the Lords. What do they look like? What are these mysterious Projects they are building? Where did they come from? As you can see, lots of unanswered questions about the cryptic Lords, but I'm sure we will find out more in the books to come.

The story is told from the perspective of Dol, a girl with the ability to feel what others are feeling and see what they are thinking. She is trying to discover what her purpose is in this crazy, messed up world along with her best friend Ro who definitely has an anger problem. :)

I loved Ro. Even though he has an extremely short temper, there is another side to him. A fun, loving side that made me think of a puppy. He means well and has a heart of gold.

Lucas is the son of the Ambassador of LA. He can manipulate people and basically get them to do whatever he wants. I wish that was my life. "You want to give me all these books for free, Amazon gods...." *total changes to zero. free books for life.* I digress. I had a really hard time liking Lucas. I tried, but I just don't freaking like him. Which made the fact that Dol has a crush on him absolutely infuriating. She should be with Ro and Lucas should be with Tima. No, scratch that, Lucas should be alone. Don't you know anything Margaret Stohl? I kid. But seriously, she better fix it in the next book....

Tima is the last main character. Her ability is never fully explained, but she is crazy smart. Techie geek, science nerd, the whole shebang. She is a very private person and is clearly terrified of letting anyone in. I really connected with Tima and absolutely loved her character. She was my favorite in the whole book and I think she needs to stop crushing on Lucas because she deserves so much better.

Overall this book blew my mind. Absolutely enthralling. The science part makes you think, but not too much. Action packed from start to finish, trust me, you will not be able to put this one down. Of course there is a love story, a frustrating one so far, but I have high hopes that it will improve. I almost forgot to mention, in between chapters there are correspondences to the Ambassador and they are like little clues left for you to try and decipher. I loved this aspect! Until I realized how bad I am at figuring out clues.... Oh well! It was still fun. As things began coming together I was able to smack myself in the forehead and go, oh yeah I get it now... Anyways, wonderful book! I highly recommend you all go out and purchase this one right now. Can't wait for the second one! Happy reading all!
