Discussion Post: Do You Judge a Book By Its Cover?

I have a confession to make. I judge a book by its cover. I know it's horrible. I try really hard not to, but I can't help it. If the cover is ugly or plain, or just doesn't catch my eye, I won't pick the book up. I won't even read the synopsis. *cringes at self* Now, if the cover catches my eye, I'll pick it up, read the synopsis, and check out the overall rating on Goodreads. Then I decide if I want to read it or not. But what it takes to really draw me into a book, to make me want more information, is a good cover. I know I'm probably missing out on lots of amazing books. Do you guys do this? I know I can't be alone.

And by that same token, are books the only thing I'm judging? What about other blogs? Are you judging based on design without even taking the time to read the content? I'm guilty of this at times, though I try not to be since I myself am not good with design, coding, etc. And what about people? Do we judge people by their appearances? We all do, I think, to a certain extent, though we may not like to admit it. How many things am I missing out on? How many people am I blowing off because I won't even give them the time of day?

Wow, this just got really serious. Sorry about that guys. But I think it's a good thing to think about and discuss. Back to books.

Here are some books that I picked up just because of the covers:

I mean, that cover is beautiful. The colors, the font, the pretty braid in the girl's hair. Who wouldn't want to read that book?

Oh my gosh, I love this cover. It's probably one of my favorite covers ever. Seriously, look at it. It's beautiful.

All the covers in this series are amazing. There's just something about that girl. And her dress. And the birdcage that draw me in.

And here's a book with a cover I don't particularly like, but oh my gosh, did I love the book!

I don't know what it is about this cover. I just don't really like it. It's boring to me. But the book is absolutely incredible. One of my all-time favorite books. I cannot recommend it enough.

So I guess what I want to know is are you guilty of this too? What are some books that you have picked up solely because of the cover? Are there any books that you've read that have a terrible cover that you ended up loving?

  1. I pay attention to the cover when I'm in a bookstore (along with the title too) but if I'm searching on Amazon, looking at their recommendations, etc. I don't. And now that I'm blogging I pay more attention to seeing books over and over on other blogs, reviews, recommendations, etc. So I guess what I'm saying is that when people are raving about a book, I don't even pay attention to the cover, but I definitely notice them in book stores and I pay attention in the sense that I'm like, beautiful cover, but it won't keep me from reading a book or make me read a book. Ok, I'm rambling. I'll stop. ~Pam

    1. Yeah, I agree with you. When I'm in a bookstore I definitely focus on the cover. But even like when I'm browsing Netgalley or Edelweiss to request books, I'll click on a lot of them if the cover is really pretty. But I do pay a lot more attention to the other blogs and which books are getting rave reviews from my blogging friends. If it's gotten great feedback from the blogosphere then I don't even pay attention to the cover. Thanks for your thoughts!

  2. I'm just like you. If the cover doesn't catch my eye, I won't pick the book up. I guess I'm a bit prejudiced because I think "if it's a really good book, then the cover will be amazing" and that's usually never the case. I agree that sometimes the cover is really misleading, like what happened in Wither for me. I really wanted to love it, but I couldn't connect to the book. I usually dislike books that have models on the cover, because they always look so unrealistic (in my opinion!), but Endless and The Pledge are two examples where I totally LOVE the model on the cover.

    1. Yay! I'm glad I'm not alone! Bummer that you didn't like Wither! I loved that series. I usually love picking up books with models on the cover. I'm really into fashion so if there's a girl with a pretty dress I'm picking it up. Lol. But I also love plenty of covers without a model like Divergent and Legend.

    2. Divergent and Legend are my favorite series! I normally wouldn't have picked up Legend, because of the cover, but I'm glad I gave it a chance!

    3. Mine too!! I am like on pins and needles waiting for Allegiant and for Champion!!! The cover of Legend I don't think is too bad, but I loooove the cover of Champion. The bullet hole... who gets shot? Does someone get shot?? It better not be Day!!! I will cry so hard if he dies.
