Top Ten Best/Worst Series Enders

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish where we make lists of bookish things!

This week's topic is Top Ten Best/Worst Series Enders:

So I haven't actually finished a lot of series... not because I don't want to finish them. Because most of them haven't come out yet! I have a lot of series that are coming to an end next year... which makes me nervous. I need to start some new ones ASAP! So I'll just talk about the ones that I have read.

The Best:

The Bitter Kingdom by Rae Carson: By far the best series ender I have ever read. Rae Carson left no stone unturned. It was glorious.

Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare: While I wasn't crazy about the epilogue, this whole book was incredible. I cried, I laughed, I smiled. It was so good.

Shades of Earth by Beth Revis: This series got better and better with each book and the finale was perfect. I loved Amy and Elder and all the twists and turns really shocked me.

Sever by Lauren DeStefano: This series was awesome. Every single book was amazing. Rhine reconnects with her brother and there are so many twists and crazy things uncovered.

The Death Cure by James Dashner: This whole series was amazing, and the finale was no different. Blew my mind. Absolutely loved it.

The Worst:

Reached by Ally Condie: I really liked Matched, but then the books just got progressively worse. And I was not a fan of this conclusion.

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins: I liked it up  until the epilogue. I felt like Katniss just kind of gave up on everything she had once believed in. She seemed a bit broken and not all there to me.

Requiem by Lauren Oliver: Do I even need to say anything? The ending. Way too open. We don't even know if Lena ends up with Julian or Alex. I mean we can guess, but I want concrete answers.

Extras by Scott Westerfeld: It wasn't a bad book, but I actually felt like the series should have just ended with Specials. I felt like Extras wasn't necessary to the series. There was a big disjoint between this book and the rest of the series.

What are your favorite series enders? Least favorites? Do you agree with my choices? Disagree? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I'm happy to see Sever on your list because that is one I'm really nervous about! I pre-ordered it, yet still haven't read it! I didn't LOVE Fever so I think that is why I'm hesitating!
Ick... Reached and Requiem were on my WORST list too!! ;)

    1. I loved that whole series! I can't wait to read Perfect Ruin. I think Lauren DeStefano tied everything up nicely and it gets super interesting and crazy in the last book.

Glad we agree on those! Requiem makes me so angry. I still go into rage mode whenever I think about it.

  2. Reached and Requiem... Getting on so many naughty lists today!! I almost feel bad for them but there were too many readers who were unpleasantly shocked or just bored.
I totally agree with you on Reached though! I really liked Matched and things just slowly got worse and worse.

    1. I feel bad for them too, but when you end a book like Requiem, you have to expect people to be upset. The Matched series was super disappointing because the first book was really good and had so much potential. Then it just failed. :(

  3. Clockwork Princess made my list too, what a great ending to a great series! I actually included Reached on my list because I thought it was a satisfying conclusion. Same with Mockingjay. Sad, but it fit the series in the sense that it was a pretty dark series. I can't believe I forgot about The Bitter Kingdom and Shades of Earth! Loved both of those books, they were excellent. ~Pam

    1. I didn't mind Mockingjay until the epilogue. It just felt like Katniss gave up and was just floating through life, ya know? But you're right it was a dark series and it did fit with the overall theme.

Bitter Kingdom!!! *fangirls* I love that series so much!!

  4. I was disappointed with Mockingjay too, but I think I'm one of the few people who didn't hate the ending to Requiem. I thought the open ending worked well with Oliver's themes of freedom and choice (but I can totally understand why others hated it!).

    1. Yeah, I wouldn't have minded if we had an open ending with the government and the way things panned out there, but it ended so abruptly. Like literally I felt like Lena could have died in the seconds after it was over. (I'm sure she didn't, but still.) And we didn't really know who she chose. Even though we can guess. Just wasn't for me. But that being said, the ending of that book was so beautifully written. The prose was simply beautiful and it was probably some of my favorite writing that I've ever read. Thanks for stopping by!
