Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish where we make lists of bookish things!
(You know when you're reading and then something happens that completely turns you off.)
Rape: I want to say that I don't mind if there is violence in a book or if a character was raped in their past and it has shaped who they are today. I know a lot of people like Enclave by Ann Aguirre, but this was one of those books that just made my skin crawl. One of the characters gets raped and there was just one line (that I can still remember clearly) that brushes it off as no big deal. That makes it sound like the victim should have fought back. I lost it. I just can't handle it. It's a serious issue and it needs to be handled with respect, not brushed off. Because of this, I never read the second book in the series and I don't plan to.
Instalove: This one is pretty obvious. You don't meet someone and one day later believe that you're madly in love with them. Real life doesn't work that way. Come on, people.
Convenience: I can't stand when things just seem to conveniently work out for a character or when a character just conveniently knows how to do something. Make the main character work for it! That's what I enjoy about reading: watching the main character handle new situations and discover a way out or around certain things.
3rd person omniscient POV: I just can't stand this POV. It jumps around too much and it makes it extremely difficult to connect with any of the characters. To be fair, in some books it is done well like the Chronicles of Nick series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, but for the most part, I just don't like it.
Typos or grammatical errors: I understand that things happen. I mean the book has how many words? There are bound to be a few typos. But when I see a LOT of typos or grammatical errors, I just get super annoyed. You couldn't take the time to properly edit your book?

I agree, insta-love can be annoying, but sometimes I can understand strong feelings developing quickly when it's a dystopian/post-apocalyptic book where everything is really intense, they spend all of their time together, and they could die any day now. But there are many books where they don't spend any time together, have maybe two conversations, and suddenly they're in love. That makes me crazy.
ReplyDeleteBtw, you should keep reading the Enclave series! The second book was really good and I can't wait for the last one. ~Pam
Yeah, I mean I get it. If a guy saves your life or the world is going to end, feelings are bound to be more intense. But like you said, two conversations and they're in love? No.
DeleteI can't keep reading the Enclave series. The first book just made me so angry that I refuse to pick up the rest of them, even though people say they are really good...I'm stubborn like that. Lol.
3rd person omniscient gets tricky sometimes! I agree. Sometimes there's not enough focus and sometimes there's also way too much information. I kind of like getting limited information.... More surprises!!
ReplyDeleteI also can't stand convenience. I know sometimes things HAVE to work out but I don't like when it's too easy! Also a delicate balance :)
It's all about balance. I agree that we get too much detail in 3rd person omniscient. I like to be kept in the dark, trying to figure things out for myself. I hate being told everything. At the same time, I don't like to be too in the dark...
DeleteI HATE when a book is always so "convinient". That's like cheating, lol xD I don't like it whenever the character "conviniently" found another way to do something and everyone and everything is perfect and no one had to suffer for it. It's so annoying. Books are supposed to be somewhat real, lol
ReplyDeleteYes, I totally agree! I don't mind some little things here and there because let's be honest, it's a book. But at the same time, it needs to be somewhat realistic. Everything shouldn't just work out for the protagonist. That's just super annoying.
DeleteI kinda felt like there was insta-love in divergent! i think Roth could've taken more time developing it.
ReplyDeleteReally? I didn't. I mean they were in initiation for weeks. And they didn't tell each other they loved each other until the end of the book. But I guess I can see where you're coming from. It could have been a bit more developed. I just think that they went through a lot together. He saved her from Peter. She saved him from the simulation. Idk. It felt believable to me. But insta-love is one of my biggest pet peeves. I hate it!!!
