Top Ten Books I Was "Forced" to Read:
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen: I didn't have to read this for school, but it was my mom's favorite book so she strongly encouraged me to read it. Best decision ever. One of my all-time favorite books. Mr. Darcy!!!!
Dracula by Bram Stoker: I read this book for AP Literature in high school and absolutely loved it. How vampires should be.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley: Another one read for AP Literature. This book broke my heart. (In a good way!)
The Giver by Lois Lowry: I read this in 7th grade English and remember loving it. I should really reread it. It was probably the first dystopian I ever read!
The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe: I read this one freshman year I think and loved it. I love all things Poe actually. (The Telltale Heart, Masque of the Red Death, Fall of the House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Black Cat)
Hamlet by William Shakespeare: I struggled through Shakespeare, but this was by far my favorite one that I read in high school (I read Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, and Hamlet). Hamlet's mental state in this play was so interesting and kept me glued to the pages.
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell: Okay, I wasn't forced, but I really wanted to participate in Cassie and Lauren's Fall Into Reading feature and the other book they were reading is called 3:59, which sounds awesome. I don't usually do contemporary and I don't do New Adult, but decided that if these two wonderful ladies were going to read it with me, I would give it a go. Wow. Thank you so much for getting me to read this book ladies! It was incredible.
The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank: My mom made me read this when I was being home schooled. My sisters and I were home schooled for three years. Loved it! And loved this book. Such a powerful story.
The Nancy Drew books by Carolyn Keene: My mom used to read these to my sisters and I when we were little. I loved these books so much. I remember her finishing a chapter and saying it was time for bed and then my sisters and I would whine and complain until she kept reading. We had some late bedtimes with these books.
Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi: My older sister made me read this book when it first came out. I absolutely love this series. Thanks, Megan!
What books were you forced to read? What were your favorite books that you read in high school? Let me know in the comments below!
Fangirl...it's so great reading a book you wouldn't normally pick up and then enjoying it. The Giver...I still haven't read that book, I really should. Pride and Prejudice...one of my favorite books of all time. I reread it every once in awhile, just to read about Mr. Darcy. Great list! ~Pam
ReplyDeleteYes, I love when that happens! It's the best feeling and it really opens you up to a new genre that you may enjoy. :) I agree. Pride and Prejudice is definitely one of my all-time favorite books. I love Mr. Darcy so much! Thanks!
DeleteMost of the books we were supposed to read for English, I didn't read (Pickwick Papers, Catcher in the Rye). I did very well in English because I gleaned so much from the discussion in class. That said, I read To Kill a Mockingbird because, by the time the class got to the third chapter, I just had to read the book. I read Catch 22 because it was suggested in my AP section. Also suggested was Portnoy's Complaint but don't read it. It is Literary Porn.
ReplyDeleteI read Dracula,on my own, and it has one of the sexiest scenes ever that has nothing to do with sex. Wow! I also read The Giver long after I was out of school.
I love To Kill a Mockingbird! I read that on my own after I was out of school. Dracula is such a good book. I don't remember what scene you're referring to. It's been awhile since I read it. Maybe I'll have to reread it to find out....
