Top Ten Books I Recommend to My Husband

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish where we make lists of bookish things!
This week's topic is Top Ten Books You Would Recommend to X Person. I chose my husband because he is not a reader and I will work my whole life to find him one book that he absolutely loves. He doesn't "get" reading. He would much rather play video games. I don't want to turn him into a reader. Really, I don't. It's fine if he would rather play games. But I really just want to find one book or one series that will make him say "I totally get why you love books so much now." So here are my top ten recommendations for my husband, a hopeless non-reader:

Divergent by Veronica Roth: I really think he would like this series. It's got some badass fighting going on, science-y things with all the serums, and almost a video game like quality with the fear landscapes. The romance is present, but definitely not overwhelming.

Legend by Marie Lu: I tried reading this one to him and I think he was enjoying it, but then I was bad and couldn't wait for him to be home so I read ahead without him. I know, I'm a bad wife. The whole scaling buildings thing reminds me of Assassin's Creed, one of his favorite games. I really think he would be able to connect with the characters and get into this series.

The Chronicles of Nick by Sherrilyn Kenyon: Good guys fighting monsters. Lots of cool creatures. A male POV. Pretty sure he would love this series. If only I could get him to read it...

Partials by Dan Wells: Super soldiers. Science stuff. Very subtle romance. Adventure. This one has it all in my opinion.

False Memory by Dan Krokos: Lots of action and mystery in this book. Cool weapons. Lots of fighting. People with special powers.

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey: Aliens. It's pretty cool stuff.

The Burning Sky by Sherry Thomas: I really think that my husband would enjoy the elemental magic in this book. He really likes reading manga, specifically Naruto and they use a lot of similar techniques in the manga as they do in this book.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner: Scary creatures. Mystery. Male POV. Friendship. Fighting.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare: Do I even need to explain this one? They hunt demons. They are badasses. Crazy creatures. Warlocks with magic.

Dark Inside by Jeyn Roberts: In this book some kind of natural disaster happens and people go nuts. They just start killing each other. Lots of action. Survival.

So basically if it has tons of action, not too much romance, magic, aliens, demons, or anything of the sort he would probably like it. It's just a matter of getting him to commit to it. Maybe he will just let me read one of these to him... *crosses fingers*

Do you have any recommendations for my stubborn non-reader husband? Who did you choose for this week's topic?

  1. Ooooh great picks! I totally love The 5th Wave as a recommendation for both male and female readers. It's so action-packed and messes with your mind! Definitely The Maze Runner, Divergent, Legend, and False Memory too! Awesome choices!

    1. Thanks! I think my husband would really enjoy the 5th Wave, but I can't convince him to give it a try. He's so obsessed with his stupid games. Lol

  2. Good topic here... :) Mr. Betty really liked The 5th Wave--- another one you could add to your list is Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. He LOVED that one! He is actually really excited for book 2 and the idea of a movie! Definitely gunna jot these down.

  3. Oooh I have The 5th Wave on my TBR pile - maybe I'll encourage my boyfriend to pick it up! :)
Also, if your hubby likes Assassins Creed, my boyfriend says the novelizations of the gameplay narratives are great! Perhaps a option for the next book encouragement?! Good luck! x

    1. He has the novelization of the Halo games and has only read book one. Fail. Maybe I will get him the first Assassins Creed game for Christmas this year and see if he will read it... I actually love those games too. The storyline is really good. I like all the history involved.

  4. All of those are definitely action-packed (and not as romance driven) so great picks for guys! My husband read The Hunger Games trilogy just to see what all the fuss was about and he enjoyed them. Definitely 5th Wave and Partials I can see guys liking (and The Maze Runner, which was ok for me). Have you read any Patrick Ness? I haven't but I hear people rave about him and The Knife of Never Letting Go (which I have but haven't read yet). Seems like those would be appealing to guys. Great list! ~Pam

    1. Thank you! They really are amazing series aren't they? Well hopefully The 5th Wave will be. Can't wait to get my hands on the second one. :)

  8. Nice picks, it's hard to get guys to read the same books as you. Even if they love reading usually they don't stray out of their comfort zone at all.

    1. True statement. My husband is all "you're constantly talking about the romance" and I'm like "yeah, but that's not what the book is all about" I think he thinks that YA books are girly. Boo.

  9. Seriously, you get it! My boyfriend is not a reader either, and I don't want him to be and people ask me (and him) all the time how we can stand it. I love that he isn't a reader, it's kind of my thing, but I would really love for him to find a book that he would just LOVE like I do :P And he is obsessed with video games... he loves them.

Partials is such a good choice for a guy IMO. It's such a good book! I also think the Maze Runner is awesome too!! Unfortunatly, I don't have any recommendations for your husband :(

    1. We would have awesome double dates. Our guys could talk games and we could just sit there for hours talking about books. Lol.

I'm like obsessed with Partials. That series is so good. I'm dying for Ruins to come out! Even if you did have a rec for my husband I doubt he would read it... he's stubborn like that.

  10. My husband and I recently finished a great book called “Sex, Rain and Cold Fusion” (the title alone should hook you!) by author A.R. Taylor (http://www.lonecamel.com/the_book/). This is a laugh out loud story of a physicist named David Oster who is living a life full of women (and bad decisions!) until he decides to chase a dream out to Washington. He is researching the physics of deep ocean waves while secretly pursuing the elusive “fifth force”. He has to overcome the pressures of colleagues, a demanding romance with an older woman and his controlling boss in his quest to uncover the truth….not to mention the attempted murder! The book truly takes some wacky twists and turns but will keep you hooked and laughing throughout. My husband and I don't often find a book that we both love but we really enjoyed reading this and chatting about it afterwards. We have been recommending it to all of our friends!
