I read the Maze Runner series way back when before I even started blogging. And I loved them. I devoured the entire trilogy. (I did not however, like the prequel and mostly just pretend it never happened.) I was super excited to see this turned into a movie, mostly because of the Grievers. I wanted to see how terrifying and gross these things were. Let me just say, they were perfect. Exactly how I imagined them.
From my understanding, James Dashner, the author, had a lot of say in this movie and it shows. Everything was so well-done. The casting was perfection. Seriously, I don't think I've ever seen a book to movie adaptation cast so well. Everyone was exactly how I pictured them.
Dylan O'Brien was the perfect Thomas. Newt, Minho, Gally, Alby, Chuck. Oh Chuck. I love him so much. So congrats to the casting directors or whoever does that part. You nailed it.
The maze and the Glade were also perfect. They took what was in my mind, turned it into a reality and then added some awesomeness. I just couldn't believe how well done everything was.
Now as far as plot and following the book goes, I can't say I'm the best judge. Because I read the books so long ago, my memory is a bit fuzzy. But I think they covered all the important things. The one thing I really liked was that it didn't feel rushed. That's probably my number one complaint about book to movie adaptations. That it's rushed and that people who haven't read the book have no idea what's going on. But my husband (who's never read the book) really enjoyed it and was totally able to follow it.
I did notice that they changed one thing. In the book, Thomas and Theresa can communicate telepathically. But they couldn't in the movie. And I have to say I actually liked this change. It kind of felt out of place in the book and I don't think that would have translated well on-screen anyway.
Overall, this was a fantastic adaptation. I'm really glad that they pushed the release date (was originally supposed to come out February 2014) so they could get everything right. Go see it if you haven't already! It's definitely worth it!
Have you seen the movie yet? What did you think?
I haven't seen it yet but everyone is saying that it's amazing! I also loved the books and can't wait to see the movie :D
ReplyDeleteIt was! I hope you enjoy it!
DeleteI'm planning on seeing the movie soon, but I only read the first book and I have almost no memory of it. At all. Glad you really liked it! ~Pam
ReplyDeleteYeah, I had a pretty sketchy memory of the book. But I almost think that's better when going to see a movie. That way you're less disappointed maybe?
DeleteI'm with Finely and Pam. :) I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm definitely planning to. I wasn't the biggest fan of the books - they were a bit meh for me - but I am still interested in seeing how the movie is; especially since many people have been saying what a good adaption it is. :) Thanks for sharing, and wonderful recap! <3

I think you'll enjoy it even if the books weren't your favorite. It was really an excellent movie.
DeleteI really really want to see it but I haven't read the books! I may break my rule for this... we'll see. I'm glad you enjoyed it! And bonus: Dylan O'BRIEN (haha).
ReplyDeleteDylan O'Brien is hot!!! Damn. You need to see it just for him.
DeleteI had the same feelings!! LOVED the casting and I thought it was absolutely perfect! I was blown away by the talent of all those young men. So amazing. I totally agree about the plot I read that book right after it came out waaaaay before blogging so I am hazy on the details but it aligned with pretty much what I remembered reading! Also...Dylan O'Brien...holy fuck that kid was hot. Reminded me of my crush on Thomas haha
ReplyDeleteYes!!!! Dylan O'Brien. I may have to start watching Teen Wolf just so I can get more of him. ;)
DeleteThere was a lot left out. Even though, that was the case I still enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteI didn't really notice stuff being left out since it had been so long since I read the book. Glad you still enjoyed it though!!
