Discussion Post: Including Your Blog on Your Resume

So some of you know that I've been unemployed for about a year now. I wasn't looking for work in Washington because my husband and I were trying to relocate. Well now we have and it's time for me to get a job. I was updating my resume and I started to wonder if I should include my blog under my experience.
For certain jobs I felt it was relevant and for others it wasn't. So I ended up creating two different resumes, one with and one without my blog, and decide which one to use based on the job I was applying for. But then I thought about it and was like, why wouldn't I include it? It's a lot of work to keep up. It's something I've worked hard at to grow and develop. Why shouldn't employers see that? I want them to see that I haven't been sitting around for a year. I want them to see that I'm a motivated self-starter. And I think that my blog shows just that.

So I put it on my resume and it looks something like this:

If I was applying for a social media management job or something like that, I would include statistics, but I feel like this is fine for most of the jobs I'm applying for. I think that having my blog on my resume shows that I'm organized, motivated, and passionate about something. It gives potential employers a small peek into who I am and what kind of personality I have. They can easily visit my blog now and see what I'm all about and how I present myself. If it's a job that involves writing, they can go to my blog and take a look at some of my reviews. There are so many things I have learned from blogging that I can apply in the workplace. So I'm keeping my blog on my resume for now and using it to my advantage.

If you're a blogger, do you include your blog on your resume? As a potential employer what do you think of resumes that list "blogger" as a job?

  1. Interesting discussion. For me, I think it depends. For example, when I applied for my part time job in retail, I included it. I figured it showed that I'm social, passionate, driven, etc. Plus some of the jobs I was applying for were in book stores.

As for when I finish graduate school and start applying for jobs in the sciences, which is what I'll be doing, I probably won't. I think my blog is irrelevant towards a job in say a forensic laboratory. So I'll probably omit it.

    1. Yeah exactly. I kind of pick and choose where it could be applicable. I just think there's so many things I've learned from blogging that I can apply to different jobs.

But definitely not applicable towards a job in a forensic laboratory. But that's super cool! When do you graduate?
